When a couple tells their planner that a live band is their wedding must have, you know it’s going to be a good time. Known to their friends as a dynamic duo, local Toronto couple Katie and Graydon never said no to a good party. When it came to planning their wedding, they wanted to ensure that they and their 150 guests would enjoy it to the fullest! Through the wedding design process, Mad Bash Group learned that Katie and Graydon had decorated their apartment in a mid-century modern style. They suggested leaning into this aesthetic and incorporated it into their wedding design proposal. Grounded with a classic black and white checkered dance floor, Mad Bash created a playful and funky colour palette of apricot, tangerine, mustard, aubergine, and moss green, which felt very them, and was so much fun to work with.

Contemporary block lettering
The couple’s modern vibes began right from the invitations that featured contemporary block lettering.

Classic silhouette with a modern twist
Katie wore a wedding dress that featured a classic mermaid-inspired fit with a more modern square-neck detail.

Color-blocked bouquets
The bridesmaids’ bouquets mirrored the modern aesthetic, with color-blocked arrangements drawn from the wedding’s vibrant palette. They really stood out against the bridesmaids’ sleek black dresses!

On trend: circular altar
To anchor the ceremony space, Mad Bash created a simple, circular white altar. Photographed by Thomas James Powell, four ribbed white plinths framed the altar, topped with lush floral arrangements by Flower Treasures featuring playful blooms like anthuriums and hanging amaranthus — sculptural and full of personality. A timeless ivory aisle runner created a linear focal point leading to the altar, with clear acrylic chairs providing a clean, contemporary finish.

Playing with reception textures
For the reception, tables were draped in light ivory organic linen with warm undertones that softened the space. Paired with beautiful natural wood cane chairs, the look felt warm, inviting, and very mid-century.

We love this detail: personalized menus
Place settings were curated to bring a specific aesthetic to the tablescape. Natural ivory stone charger plates grounded the setting, while green velvet napkins added a bold, tactile pop of color. Modern gold flatware lent a funky yet still classic feel, and smokey glassware added a playfully retro vibe.

Floral inspiration: fresh and funky
Centerpieces brought a sense of funkiness to the table, incorporating florals such as anthuriums and dahlias, for a clean, modern look.

Lounge spaces around the dance floor
Mad Bash designed a floor plan that would keep everyone at the heart of the celebration, so they placed velvet olive lounge sofas with end tables around the dance floor, inviting guests to enjoy cocktails and conversation.

Pops of black… yes, black!
Mad Bash and team also upgraded the bar at The Symes (one of our favorite Toronto wedding venues), and added black ribbed bars and bar backs, to complement the checkered dance floor and keep things looking modern.

Disco balls & a dance floor
With the band The 99s booked, Katie and Graydon needed a stage and dance floor worthy of their amazing tunes. To amp up the party vibe, Mad Bash hung disco balls from the ceiling at varying heights and sizes, which brought energy and movement to the space. They installed a dance floor in a classic black-and-white checker pattern with a subtle marble finish, which we absolutely loved. It brought a classic, polished mid-century vibe and anchored the space fabulously. To connect the ceiling to the dance floor, the stage was decorated with giant silver spheres, tying everything together and creating a dynamic focal point that amplified the party atmosphere!

On trend: vintage heart-shaped cake
Of course, no detail was overlooked when it came to the cake. Loving the latest trend of vintage piped cakes, Kwento created a single-tier heart-shaped cake in crisp white, finished with a delicate “Just Married” in black — the perfect sweet ending to an incredible day.
