This Bride’s Father Surprised Her By Securing Her Dream Wedding Venue

Some wedding venues are discovered through endless searching. For Mackenzie and Ricky, theirs was chosen years before they ever met.

Their story first began at Oklahoma State University, where Ricky was completing his student teaching. As he fondly recalls, “Lucky for me, Mackenzie was in one of the classes.” Although the two immediately noticed one another, they kept their interactions focused on coursework, never imagining they would one day become husband and wife.

Following graduation, both independently relocated to Oklahoma City to begin their careers. It wasn’t until attending a mutual friend’s wedding in 2022 that fate brought them back together. After that evening, they seemed to cross paths everywhere—from neighborhood cafés and Oklahoma State alumni tailgates to one particularly memorable encounter at Trader Joe’s. That final meeting gave Ricky the encouragement he needed to ask Mackenzie on a date. They began dating a month later and were engaged by 2024.

Their wedding at Cold Springs Ranch, planned by Lucky Penny Events and photographed by Leah Black Photography, would become just as serendipitous as the story that led them there.

A venue choice years in the making

Long before Ricky entered the picture, Mackenzie unknowingly chose the place where she would one day marry. During a sunset drive through the Texas Hill Country with her father, she admired the beauty of Cold Springs Ranch. Her father quietly tucked that conversation away, later approaching the ranch owners with a simple question: If the day ever came, would they consider hosting his daughter’s wedding?

Years later, that thoughtful gesture became reality. Nestled in the hills of Kerrville, Texas, Cold Springs Ranch—one of the area’s last small working cattle ranches—provided an extraordinary backdrop that carried both emotional significance and remarkable natural beauty.

A delicate floral arch from Sundrop Flora framed the couple as they exchanged vows, while rows of wooden benches and single-stem roses tucked gently into the earth lined the aisle.

Ranch-inspired floral design

Inspired by the ranch itself, the floral design reflected the colors and textures already present throughout the landscape.

Wildflowers, fresh greenery, and understated arrangements complemented rather than competed with the natural surroundings. The restrained floral palette reinforced the effortless beauty of the Hill Country, creating a celebration that felt deeply connected to its environment.

Golden hour wedding portraits

As golden light settled across the ranch, Mackenzie and Ricky wandered through open fields of blooming dandelions, where the sweeping mountain views transformed even the simplest moments into unforgettable portraits.

The celebration embraced the welcoming spirit of the ranch while introducing thoughtful, relaxed hospitality. Comfortable lounge furniture created inviting gathering spaces where guests could enjoy cocktails before dinner, while a charming cocktail truck added a playful touch that perfectly complemented the laid-back atmosphere.

Dinner was equally memorable, with fresh paella served directly from the pan—an interactive dining experience that encouraged guests to gather, linger, and celebrate together.

Inside the reception tent, clean-lined wooden tables were accented with wildflowers that echoed the surrounding fields. Every seat offered uninterrupted views of the rolling hills, allowing the Texas landscape to remain part of the celebration long after sunset.
