An Elegant Takeover in Edinburgh at this $40,000 Winter Wedding

On the day of their wedding, Tamsin and Neil were greeted with the perfect winter weather. Crisp blue skies and the most magical golden and blue hour as they watched the sky change colour above Edinburgh. Tamsin’s vision for the day was: magical, timeless, and fun. It’s safe to say all of these words were exactly what the day felt like. The details of the wedding were simple but classy. The floral styling by Planet Flowers incorporated classic colours of white and green with large vases to help fill the height of the room. She also rented fairy lights to fall down the sides of the intricate walls of the historic Mansfield Traquair. This really helped turn the atmosphere of the space into a magical winter celebration.  Keep scrolling to see all of the beautiful photos of this day by Courtney Marie Photography, and make sure to check out all the images in the full gallery here!

For her bridal prep, Tamsin rented an apartment with high ceilings and large windows. The interior was very minimalistic, making her gorgeous Pronovias gown stand out in her getting-ready photographs. For Tamsin, the dress she ultimately chose was nothing like she initially imagined she would wear, which made it all the more special. It suited both her and the venue so perfectly - it was a must-wear.  With a luxury wedding venue like Mansfield Traquair and its incredibly high ceilings, a statement dress like this Pronovias gown was beyond well-suited and ultimately created an iconic look.

At the ceremony space just a 5-minute drive away, the wedding guests were eagerly awaiting Tamsin’s arrival. The couple opted for a Humanist ceremony complete with a handfasting, which is a popular choice in Scotland. Tamsin and Neil’s carefully curated timeline for the day worked perfectly for the guests, lighting, and scheduled photographs. Group shots immediately followed the ceremony, and Tamsin and Neil hired a magician in entertain their guests and bridal party for the time they would be away for private couple portraits.  While the guests were being entertained, and the canapes and drinks were flowing, the bride and groom hopped into a white, vintage car with their photographer to visit two of the photographer's favourite photo spots in Edinburgh, which had been planned in advance taking into consideration the timing and light. They didn’t want to be away from their guests for too long, which meant that they had a relatively short window for couple portraits.   The couple first visited Circus Lane while the daylight lasted. And then, they made their way to the most scenic spot in Edinburgh – Calton Hill. Looking down on the 360 view of the cultural, gothic city of Edinburgh, this was the perfect location for sunset and blue hour portraits.  The rooftops lit up in a golden, red colour as the last moments of the golden light hit them from one side. And on the other side was the cloud inversion surrounding the water on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The couple and their photographer were greeted with the most perfect blue hour and crescent moon. As the sky slowly turned into millions of shades of pastel, no one cared about the cold.

As the couple arrived back at the venue, the guests were seated and ready to greet the new Mr. and Mrs. The speeches were incredibly emotional as Neil sadly had his father pass suddenly last year. Following the speeches, the couple enjoyed a 3-course meal from their honeymoon table.  Before the party really started, Tamsin wanted a quick hair change and opted for a hair down second look. She had her fabulous team of hairdressers, Chris Dickson Hairdressing, for the entire day. Tamsin enjoyed an intimate moment and first dance with her dad before her first dance with Neil. They offered an open bar to all guests that attended the day and before they knew it, the party was in full swing!

Advice from the photographer

~ For a winter wedding, ensure that the timing of your photographs for the day works well for the winter light. Have this conversation ahead of the day with your photographer and discuss the best photo spots at your venue/location and how you can make your dream wedding photographs come true, regardless of season or weather.

~ If you are booking a separate space to get ready, send your wedding photographer links of potential properties in advance. This is so that your wedding photographer can offer advice and guidance to ensure that they can achieve the best bridal prep photos for the bride, groom, and wedding party.

~ Take into account the style of your wedding venue when choosing a wedding dress to achieve a coherent overall look.
