For M.C. and Gregory, a destination wedding was never simply about choosing a beautiful location—it was about sharing a life-changing experience with the people they love most. Their celebration in French Polynesia became a thoughtfully curated wedding weekend that honored the islands’ extraordinary beauty, rich cultural traditions, and deep connection to the ocean.
Centered around an exclusive takeover of Niu Beach Hotel, the multi-day celebration planned with Johanna Berard and photographed by Helene Havard invited 75 family members and friends to experience French Polynesia through adventure, hospitality, and meaningful cultural traditions, creating memories that extended far beyond the wedding day itself.

One “whale” of a way to welcome guests
The inspiration for the celebration began years earlier when M.C. and Gregory first visited French Polynesia and experienced something that forever changed them. Swimming face-to-face with humpback whales became one of the most profound moments of their lives, and they immediately knew they wanted to recreate that feeling for the people closest to them.
In the days surrounding the wedding, the couple arranged guided whale-swimming excursions for all 75 guests, offering everyone the rare opportunity to encounter humpback whales in their natural habitat. It was the perfect beginning to a wedding week centered on connection, adventure, and appreciation for the destination.

An event with eight – yes, eight! – custom looks

Fashion became an extension of the celebration’s adventurous spirit. Across the wedding festivities, M.C. and Gregory wore eight different custom looks, seamlessly blending couture gowns by Fabio Toñanez of IBRAINA Atelier, bespoke tailoring, and relaxed island style.

Alongside custom bridal gowns and Gregory’s tailored black linen tuxedo from SARTORO, M.C. also incorporated a bespoke bridal bikini by Demi Thomas of La Chenille Bridal Bikini that perfectly reflected the carefree spirit of their destination celebration.

Traditional Tahitian ceremony with an entrance
Rather than hosting a traditional ceremony, M.C. and Gregory embraced the customs of French Polynesia with deep respect and intention. Guests traveled by boat to the private island of Motu Tiahura, where the ceremony unfolded amidst breathtaking ocean views.

Gregory made an unforgettable entrance aboard a jet ski wearing a custom black linen tuxedo, while M.C. arrived in a traditional Tahitian outrigger canoe, creating two dramatically different yet equally memorable arrivals.

Their traditional Tahitian ceremony included a sacred Auti leaf handfasting, being wrapped together in a handcrafted tifaifai quilt, and receiving a shared Tahitian name—Moanahau, meaning Ocean Peace. Every ritual reflected the couple’s desire to honor the culture that had become so meaningful to them.

A meaningful alternative to wedding bands
One of the weekend’s most personal moments came in place of a traditional ring exchange. Rather than exchanging wedding bands, M.C. and Gregory chose to be tattooed by the legendary Lolo Tattoo, embracing one of French Polynesia’s centuries-old artistic traditions.

The experience became even more meaningful as five of their guests joined them, choosing commemorative tattoos of their own to mark the occasion. It was a powerful expression of respect for local culture while creating permanent reminders of an unforgettable celebration.

A post-ceremony swim with sharks
Just one hour after exchanging vows, M.C. and Gregory traded their wedding attire for swimsuits and returned to the water, diving into the lagoon to swim alongside sharks and stingrays—an experience that perfectly reflected their lifelong love of the ocean.

A reception set in the water with stingrays

The reception embraced the ocean in a way few celebrations ever could. Dinner tables were thoughtfully arranged directly in the shallow water, allowing guests to dine surrounded by the natural beauty of the lagoon. As everyone enjoyed fresh lobster and ahi tuna tartare, stingrays glided gently between the tables, occasionally brushing against guests’ legs while accepting small bites from willing diners.

The immersive dining experience blurred the line between nature and celebration, creating a reception unlike anything most guests had ever experienced.

Traditional Tahitian entertainment
As evening settled over the island, local fire dancers transformed the beach into a spectacular celebration of Polynesian culture. Their performances brought energy, artistry, and tradition together beneath the night sky, providing a breathtaking finale to an already unforgettable wedding day.

The final adventure of the weekend: skydiving
A few days later, M.C. and Gergory concluded the wedding week by skydiving over the very island where they had married, ending the celebration with one final adventure.

A wedding that can only be described as wild and authentic

Every aspect of M.C. and Gregory’s wedding reflected their belief that the most memorable celebrations are deeply personal. From swimming with humpback whales and embracing centuries-old Tahitian traditions to dining in the ocean and skydiving above paradise, their wedding wasn’t simply held in French Polynesia—it was completely shaped by it.

Wild, authentic, adventurous, and profoundly meaningful, their celebration became a beautiful reminder that the most unforgettable destination weddings don’t just showcase a place—they invite every guest to truly experience it.
