Sophie and Austin’s relationship began during one of the most unexpected seasons in recent history. During the COVID-era shutdowns, they met for a first date over a bottle of wine and hours of conversation. Sophie immediately felt at ease, remembering how Austin kept her laughing from the moment they met. Austin was equally drawn to Sophie’s confidence, ambition, and the effortless connection they shared. From the beginning, they spoke openly about their dreams, careers, and the future they hoped to build together.
A little more than three years after that first date, Austin proposed on Santa Monica Beach, one of their favorite places. After sharing heartfelt words and asking Sophie to spend forever with him, she answered with an enthusiastic, “Duh!” The evening continued with a celebration in Hermosa Beach, where they had first built a home together.
For their wedding at Cuyama Buckhorn, planned with the help of Birch and Honey Collective and captured by Mandee Johnson, the couple envisioned something entirely their own—a celebration that felt artistic, playful, and deeply rooted in the striking landscape of California’s high desert.

Funky desert disco inspiration
Inspired by what they lovingly described as a “funky desert disco,” the wedding embraced an earthy yet fashion-forward aesthetic that perfectly complemented the rugged surroundings of New Cuyama.

Hosted at Cuyama Buckhorn Resort in the Hidden Valley of Enchantment, the celebration drew inspiration from the area’s expansive mountain views, seasonal wildflowers, and endless night skies. Rather than overwhelming the landscape, the design enhanced it through expressive color, sculptural florals, natural textures, and playful disco-inspired accents. The overall atmosphere felt relaxed, artistic, and refreshingly unconventional.

Individually installed ceremony florals

The ceremony offered one of the most unforgettable design moments of the entire wedding. Instead of a traditional floral installation, each individual bloom was carefully placed by Lovelia Floral into tiny holes drilled directly into the earth, creating the remarkable illusion that the flowers were naturally growing from the desert floor.

Against the backdrop of rolling mountains, the installation felt almost surreal—minimal in construction yet breathtaking in impact.

This particular floral design honored the beauty of the landscape while introducing an entirely fresh approach to floral design.

Ikebana-inspired arrangements
Florals served as the visual thread connecting every part of the celebration. The arrangements embraced an ikebana-inspired approach, allowing each bloom room to breathe while highlighting sculptural forms and intentional composition.

Long farm tables featured delicate arrangements that felt organic rather than overly abundant, while colorful fruit woven into the bouquets introduced texture, vibrancy, and an unexpected nod to the harvest-inspired surroundings.

Even the string lights became part of the floral story, adorned with individual stems that transformed overhead lighting into a floating garden installation. Together, the floral design felt imaginative, refined, and unlike anything guests had experienced before.

Relaxed disco reception design
As daylight faded into the desert evening, the celebration naturally transitioned into a relaxed yet energetic reception.

Disco-inspired décor added playful personality without distracting from the surrounding landscape, creating an atmosphere that felt stylish rather than themed. Warm lighting, layered design details, and the open desert setting encouraged guests to settle in, celebrate, and enjoy the evening well into the night.

The balance between natural beauty and creative styling gave the reception its unmistakable character.

Advice from the couple: be present
One of the couple’s priorities throughout the wedding was creating space to simply be present. From emotional toasts to hours spent dancing beneath the stars, the day unfolded without feeling rushed. Every moment invited connection, allowing family and friends to celebrate alongside them with genuine joy.

Reflecting on the experience, Sophie shared: “I didn’t expect to fall even more in love with Austin that day. But hearing his vows and sharing mine brought me a joy I had never felt before.” It was a reminder that while thoughtful design creates beautiful photographs, the most lasting memories are often rooted in the emotions shared throughout the day.

Honoring two cultures

The celebration also beautifully reflected the blending of Sophie and Austin’s heritages. Jewish and Japanese traditions were thoughtfully incorporated throughout the evening, creating a wedding that honored both families in meaningful ways. Guests enthusiastically gathered for the hora before enjoying playful late-night bites of mini karaage chicken, allowing cultural traditions to coexist naturally within the relaxed spirit of the celebration.

A wedding as adventurous as their love story
Sophie and Austin’s wedding at Cuyama Buckhorn proved that luxury wedding design doesn’t have to follow convention. Through innovative floral artistry, meaningful cultural traditions, expressive design, and an atmosphere centered on joy and connection, they created a celebration that felt deeply personal and unmistakably original.

Set beneath the vast skies of California’s high desert, it was a wedding that embraced creativity without ever losing sight of what mattered most: the people, the promises, and the adventure still ahead.
