Madeline (from the USA) and Alistair (from South Africa) first met in 2017 at a pub in Cape Town during Madeline’s university exchange program. What followed was a seven-year journey of long-distance love, transatlantic flights, and time zones. Despite the odds, their bond only deepened. Alistair proposed on top of a ski mountain in Telluride, Colorado, with 360-degree views and no one around for miles. For their wedding at Boschendal Wine Estate in South Africa, The Wedding Fairy helped Madeline and Alistair create an ombre neutral masterpiece that incorporated plenty of sentimental and culturally inspired details, all captured by Adorn Photography & Film and set against a stunning natural backdrop.

Madeline wore a classic, full-length Elbeth Gillis gown in duchess satin, with elegant pearl button detailing down the back. Her bridal look was styled with a soft updo and delicate floral hairpiece by Marnel Toerien. Her bouquet by A Floral featured the iconic South African white King Protea with lush greenery and soft yellow accents.
Groom’s style: family tartan pocket square
Alistair wore a custom white dinner jacket and black tuxedo pants by Kale & Co Bespoke Tailors, complete with a Ross family tartan pocket square—his nod to his Scottish heritage. His brothers and the couple’s dads also wore tartan touches for a heartfelt handfasting ceremony.
The wedding party: intentionally understated
The wedding party was kept intentionally understated and untraditional—floral corsages for the grannies, page boys in matching tartan, and personal accessories with meaning.
Venue: Boschendal’s Olive Press
The couple married at Boschendal’s Olive Press—a working wine estate surrounded by mountains and vineyards in South Africa’s Cape Winelands. Their design brief? “The last golden week of summer.” Earthy but elevated. Editorial but meaningful.

On trend: Attending cocktail hour
The newlyweds opted to mingle freely with guests during cocktail hour, as opposed to hurrying off to take their portraits.

Alistair got the party started with a champagne saber opening which ended up being one of their favorite memories!
Ombre neutral banquet tables
Two ombré floral feasting tables stretched across the reception space, with cascading arrangements in cream, yellow, rust, and blush. Every detail had cultural weight: wooden hippos in tribute to Alistair’s grandfather, Zulu hats, glowing papier-mâché elephant tusks, and a marimba band to bring joyful rhythm to the cocktail hour.
On trend: espresso martini bar
Later in the evening, espresso martinis were served just as fire dancers lit up the lawn. A surprise saxophonist brought the dance floor to life, while basket lanterns and night-time jungle greenery created a moody, romantic vibe.
Celebration of life, love, and resilience
The most powerful part of their wedding journey? Madeline’s mother was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer less than a year before the big day. Her being there, surrounded by love, laughter, and beauty, turned the wedding into something far more meaningful: a celebration of life, resilience, and love.

“Take a moment at some point in the evening—just the two of you—to step back and observe it all. We slipped away to our ceremony lawn after the formalities ended and just sat together, watched our guests dance, laughed about everything that happened, and soaked it in. That little moment is what we’ll remember forever.”

“Design with intention. Every item in this wedding, whether cultural or visual, had a reason for being there. Avoid styling trends for the sake of it. The most compelling weddings are rooted in story and soul.”
