Lion dancers, chinoiserie, and a dragon cake filled this Seattle Chinese Garden wedding with meaning

Share

Red fans, blue chinoiserie, lion dancers, and a red-and-gold dragon cake filled Elisa and Daren’s wedding with references to Daren’s Chinese heritage, but the setting itself may have been the most meaningful choice of all.

The couple, in coordination with Jubilee Weddings & Events, wanted to bring that cultural connection together with Elisa’s vision for an outdoor garden celebration. At the Seattle Chinese Garden and Song Mei Pavilion in West Seattle, they found both, surrounded by cultivated gardens, bamboo, and architecture that gave the day a distinct sense of place.

Their relationship, however, began in a far less planned way.

A business card led to a second chance meeting

Elisa and Daren first met at the Washington Athletic Club bar, where Elisa handed Daren her business card at the end of the night. Neither thought much of the encounter until a few weeks later, when they unexpectedly passed each other while walking on 4th Avenue.

Daren offered to walk Elisa back to her office, and the two soon made plans for lunch. From there, their relationship began to unfold.

Years later, Daren prepared both a plan A and plan B for his proposal, unsure what January weather in Seattle would bring. The day arrived bright and sunny, allowing him to move forward with a beachside picnic at Golden Gardens. With help from his parents, he arranged roses in the sand before asking Elisa to marry him.

There was just one detail Daren didn’t know: after he had asked Elisa’s father for permission, her father had shared the news with her days later. Elisa had time to savor the anticipation, while her easy “yes” caught Daren slightly off guard.

The Seattle Chinese Garden brought culture and nature together

When planning their wedding, Elisa and Daren searched for a setting that could honor Daren’s Chinese heritage while still giving Elisa the outdoor garden celebration she envisioned.

The Seattle Chinese Garden and Song Mei Pavilion offered that combination naturally. Photographed by Alante Photography, cultivated plant life and serene garden spaces surrounded the celebration, while the setting provided a meaningful cultural connection that extended beyond decor alone.

Their daughter joined them for the ceremony as flower girl, making the moment particularly personal for the family.

Red fans became part of the ceremony

Red emerged as one of the wedding’s defining colors.

Elisa carried a vibrant red bouquet from Alice’s Floral Design accented by a coordinating red fan as she walked down the aisle. Guests received red fans of their own, a thoughtful detail that also helped everyone stay cool beneath the July sun.

The color continued throughout the celebration, connecting the ceremony to the reception while creating a striking contrast against the abundant greenery of the garden.

Lion dancers brought another layer of celebration

Live musicians and Mak Fai Dragon and Lion Dance Association lion dancers added energy and movement as the wedding unfolded, bringing another cultural element into a day already filled with meaningful references to heritage.

Yet Elisa and Daren’s celebration never felt like a collection of disconnected traditions or decorative motifs. Each detail served a purpose, whether honoring family and heritage, helping guests experience the garden, or simply making everyone feel considered.

A quiet moment behind the bamboo became a favorite memory

Some of the day’s most memorable moments happened away from the larger celebration.

Tucked behind bamboo, Elisa and Daren shared a quiet moment together while signing their marriage certificate. Later, while moving between photographs and festivities, two servers appeared with champagne and a tray containing two of every appetizer from their custom menu.

Jubilee Weddings & Events had anticipated something the newlyweds themselves might not have: that they would need a moment to actually experience the food and drink they had selected for everyone else.

“Sitting as newlyweds,” they shared, “that first sip of champagne and bite of food from our custom menu became our favorite memory of the day.”

Chinoiserie and red accents defined the reception

The reception continued the rich red palette while introducing blue chinoiserie vases throughout the dining space.

The combination of saturated red and traditional blue-and-white patterns brought visual depth to the garden setting while continuing the cultural influences woven throughout the day.

Guests were also encouraged to experience more of the property itself. Personalized walking maps invited them to explore the grounds, reinforcing the relaxed atmosphere Elisa had envisioned for her outdoor celebration.

An Asian-inspired menu ended with a red-and-gold dragon cake

Food became another opportunity to incorporate cultural influences into the guest experience.

An Asian-inspired menu was followed by a custom red-and-gold dragon wedding cake created by one of Daren’s close friends. The striking cake continued the celebration’s red palette while bringing another deeply personal connection into the reception.

As a final gesture, guests received custom chopsticks and bamboo steamers sourced from China, extending the thoughtfulness of the celebration beyond the wedding day itself.

From their daughter’s role as flower girl to red fans beneath the July sun, a quiet glass of champagne behind the scenes, lion dancers, chinoiserie, and a cake made by a close friend, the wedding balanced cultural significance with the warmth of a family celebration. At the Seattle Chinese Garden, Elisa and Daren created a day that honored where they came from while celebrating the life they had built together.
