Get well acquainted with your venue

From The Bride: Selecting our venue was a huge decision, and it felt like we had visited every outdoorsy venue in the Hudson Valley. A lot of things clicked into place when we finally we found the Wainwright House. The house itself is gorgeous, but it was really the grounds that sold us. We loved that our guests would be able to explore the gardens and walk down by the water. Having our ceremony underneath the two huge trees and overlooking the harbor was a dream come true. The lawn and garden, the view of the water, and the gorgeous white tent really shaped a lot of the other aesthetic decisions we made. Although we didn't have a firm theme, a very soft, elegant, and natural garden feel inspired by the house developed as we went forward. We selected blush, gold, and creams as our main colors for the wedding to compliment the surroundings, and chose flowers that were very lush and looked as if we could have gathered them from the house gardens that morning.

Meaningful DIY details

Our decor elements were largely a combination of DIY and very personally meaningful details. I made our card box, all of our table numbers, designed the photo signs and wedding day timelines for the bridal party, and sewed silk clutches for my bridesmaids. We also custom designed the invitation suite and menus with the stationer. Our cake topper was custom made to look like us down to the clothing...which meant Oscar, who didn't want to have any idea what my dress was going to look like until the ceremony, didn't see it until the cake was brought out. Since we are a little obsessed with our dog, but she wasn't able to join us at the wedding, adding her on to our guestbook tree was really special to us. I also pinned my late grandmother's brooch to my bouquet as my "something old," and my aunts and uncles surprised us with an acapella rendition of the family song - a moment I'll never forget.

Prioritize fun

For the reception, making sure our guests had fun was our only priority. We clustered the wedding formalities together as much as possible to maximize the dance floor time, opted for Cassi Claire's FUNbooth (a huge hit with our guests) instead of favors, and set up a cigar and whiskey bar outside the tent. That our guests had a lot of different ways to enjoy the reception was exactly what we hoped for when we first started planning, and seeing friends and family members from very different areas of our lives, who had never met before, having a great time together made every second of work and planning worth it. We genuinely could not be happier with how everything came out, and if we were given the opportunity to do it all over again, we wouldn't change a single decision.Witness the smiles and laughter for yourselves in the video below, filmed by Magic Flute Videos.
