Deciding on your wedding cake flavor is quite possibly the most fun and stress-free decision that you will have to make on your wedding planning adventure, but just because it’s fun, doesn’t mean it’s easy. And these days, there’s so much more than just chocolate or vanilla to choose from, so with so many delectable options, we reached out to one of our favorite bakeries, LILA Cake Shop, to get the inside scoop on exactly how couples should go about deciding which flavor to say yes to.

Once you’ve got the flavor narrowed down, it’s time to think about the actual design of the cake. Check out these wedding cakes that look more like art and these wedding cake toppers that are actually attractive.

Things To Consider

Just to get a baseline, we first asked what their most popular flavor was and we could never have guessed! According to Lara, co-owner and baking genius behind, LILA Cake Shop, in 2021 Churro, a cinnamon cake with dulce de leche and cinnamon buttercream, was their most popular flavor. With a combo like that, it’s easy to see why. But that awesome answer made us realize, when it comes to choosing your wedding cake flavor, the sky’s the limit. You’re choosing so much more than a flavor, it’s a flavor palette. The flavor of the cake itself helps set the scene and round out your entire wedding experience for one sweet finish. Lara says, “When choosing cake flavors, couples should consider their tastes, variety for their guests, and the season of their wedding. I tend to feel like the couple should really honor their taste preferences. Our menu consists of a balance of lighter flavors (berries, citrus) and richer flavors (chocolate, spices, caramel/dulce de leche) to please all palates.” Lighter flavors are perfect for spring and summer months and rich flavors are always crowd-pleasers, especially for crisp autumn and winter weddings.

Flavors That Should Be On Your Radar

We asked Lara which flavors by LILA Cake Shop are trending for 2022 and these are the ones she said are vying for the lead.

  • Lemon Honey Lavender- love this flavor for a spring garden wedding!
  • Chocolate Raspberry- you can’t go wrong with this classic flavor, it’s always a crowd-pleaser.
  • Strawberry Shortcake- with cottage-core still going strong, it’s no surprise that this charming flavor is gaining popularity.
  • Romeo + Juliet- a vanilla cake with guava compote and cream cheese buttercream, this innovative flavor sounds as pretty as it is delicious.

The best way to approach potential allergy concerns and dietary restrictions

Chances are you and your caterer have taken your guest’s dietary restrictions and allergies into consideration when selecting your menu, but this can be easy to overlook when you’re tempted by incredible wedding cake flavors. The great news is that most bakeries have recipes that can accommodate common allergies like gluten and dairy intolerances and vegan diets. It’s also super important to go through a reputable bakery that has good reviews and takes cross-contamination very seriously.

Can You Choose More Than One Flavor?

Yes–and you should! While Lara recommends that couples “stick with two flavor options to make it easier for their guests to choose” she says that most couples opt for a different flavor for each tier. With so many delicious options, it would be so easy to get carried away. The important thing to remember is that dining at your wedding should be a cohesive experience for you and your guests, so before you commit to a wide array of flavors for your cake, make sure that each one will complement the meal and the drinks that you’ll be serving it alongside.
