They turned their wedding into the ultimate adult summer camp

Share

Sarah and Bobby’s love story began decades before either of them realized it. Growing up, their families attended many of the same summer camps in northern Minnesota. Although their paths crossed throughout childhood, it wasn’t until years later—thanks to one of Sarah’s lifelong friends, who also happens to be Bobby’s sister—that they found their way back to one another. After eight years together, Bobby proposed during an anniversary getaway in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado, before surprising Sarah with an engagement party surrounded by family and friends.

When it came time to plan their wedding with Prive Events, they wanted every guest to experience the Colorado they had fallen in love with—from the mountains and outdoor adventures to the craft beer culture and relaxed pace of mountain living.

A camp-inspired weekend at Piney River Ranch

Nestled beneath sweeping mountain peaks, Piney River Ranch immediately became the heart of their wedding vision.

Photographed by Leah Black Photography, the venue’s rustic cabins, winding gravel paths, central lodge, and endless outdoor scenery reminded the couple of the northern Minnesota summer camps that first connected their families. Rather than simply hosting a wedding in the mountains, they created a full weekend experience that invited guests to embrace Colorado’s adventurous spirit.

The surrounding landscape inspired a rich palette of forest greens, deep blues, and muted purple-gray tones that echoed the mountains stretching beyond the ceremony.

Nostalgic invitation suite inspiration

From the very beginning, the celebration embraced its nostalgic camp theme with thoughtful details that felt elevated rather than expected.

The custom invitation suite by EJD Design included beautifully illustrated event maps that guided guests through the weekend, while wooden name tags, pennant signage, and handcrafted floral table runners woven on a Swedish weaving mill reinforced the camp-inspired aesthetic. Every element reflected the couple’s shared history while maintaining a timeless, refined design.

Bridal style with a Colorado twist

Sarah’s bridal style perfectly reflected the spirit of the celebration—timeless with a distinctly Colorado twist.

She paired her wedding gown from a&be bridal with white Birkenstocks, embracing comfort without sacrificing style. Family traditions also played a meaningful role in her bridal look, including a sixpence tucked into her shoe and a cherished family handkerchief wrapped around her bouquet. Together, these details blended sentimentality with effortless mountain style.

Ceremony design with a mountain backdrop

Set against one of Colorado’s most breathtaking backdrops, the ceremony allowed nature to take center stage.

Bluegrass cocktail hour entertainment

A live bluegrass band welcomed guests with music throughout the ceremony and cocktail hour, creating a relaxed atmosphere that perfectly complemented the mountain setting. Their willingness to take song requests added another layer of warmth, making guests feel like participants rather than spectators.

Canoe portraits in the Colorado mountains

One of the weekend’s most unforgettable moments took place on the water. Surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery, Sarah and Bobby paddled across the lake in a flower-adorned canoe, creating portraits that felt both adventurous and deeply romantic. The setting captured everything they loved about Colorado—its peaceful landscapes, outdoor lifestyle, and sense of freedom.

Wooden lodge reception inspiration

Inside the ranch’s wooden lodge, the celebration continued beneath soaring timber beams adorned with climbing floral installations.

Lush greenery intertwined with delicate blooms softened the rustic architecture, while subtle sprigs of hops tucked into the arrangements paid tribute to one of the couple’s favorite shared pastimes: exploring Colorado’s craft beer scene.

Rather than serving a traditional wedding cake, Sarah and Bobby embraced the camp theme with an interactive s’mores bar, where guests gathered around an open fire to toast marshmallows and end the evening on a nostalgic note.

A weekend that ended at the farmer’s market

The celebration didn’t end with the final dance. The following morning, guests wandered through the Vail Farmers’ Market, soaking in one last taste of mountain life before heading home. It was the perfect conclusion to a weekend that celebrated not only Sarah and Bobby’s relationship but also the experiences, traditions, and landscapes that helped shape it. From handcrafted details and bluegrass music to canoe portraits and campfire s’mores, every part of the weekend felt unmistakably personal.
