The Real Difference Between Getting Married And Planning A Wedding

A Fashion Inspired Wedding Editorial at Washington, DC's Historic Meridian House

Nikki Daskalakis of Curved And Co put it so well, they described a wedding as a series of "curated moments". That is so true! We all know the wedding timeline: getting ready, ceremony, cocktail hour, reception, exit...and without design, sure, all of those moments would still occur, and yes, you could photograph them as is. The real art of planning a wedding is curating those moments, making sure that a cohesive color pallette runs through them, that the ensembles take the couple on a journey, that the guests are taken along for the ride from the moment their invitation arrives in the mail. Yes, a marriage happens when you commit to spending forever with your person, but a wedding is the art that celebrates that marriage.

When Haven And Spruce planned this inspiration shoot at DC's famed Meridian House, they wanted to provide an outline for couples to show them how to make each moment of their wedding day special. Sweet Root Village designed these gorgeous flower arrangements that are purposefully understated to keep the focus on the couple and enhance the already incredible venue. These photos and video by Curved & Co. follow the couple from the moment they arrive at their wedding venue until they make their fashionable exit and every stolen moment in between. You can see even more photos from this stunning editorial in the full gallery. Read on to hear more from Nikki Daskalakis of Curved & Co. about how to curate your own wedding.

WHAT SHE WORE

For this fashion-inspired wedding editorial in Washington, DC's historic Meridian House, we focused on the emotive moments of the day. We considered the many looks for our fashionable bride to wear throughout such a monumental day and the details that would be important to her. Our bride picked her wardrobe based on how she wanted her guests to see her. The first gown, by Ritual Unions, was a show-stopping moment that wouldn't have been complete without spinning around. Her second gown, also by Ritual Unions was a bit more subdued, but also show-stopping with an attached cape–it allowed the vows to be truly heard. Lastly, she changed into a short Sophie et Voila shift dress with dripping jewels to allow for dancing.

CURATING A MOMENT

Weddings are so much more than a party, they're about a feeling and curating moments that help tell that story. An understated floral design enhances the overall mood of the day, allowing the Meridian House to speak for itself. Our couple shares a private moment to enjoy champagne and a moment with their new partner while they dance around in the lobby, then the two sneak off for a short smoke break away from the party.

CAPTURING THE DETAILS

The wedding details included a sugar floral cake by Jisoo Cake Design with miniature cakes for tasting, displayed with beautiful local dogwoods in bloom. Flatlays included both embossed and letterpress details to enhance mood without stealing the show, although the Erstwhile rings truly shined on top. The entire day was also captured on Super 8mm film.
