The 90s Songs You Need to Have At Your Wedding
A few weeks ago, we did a post about 90s throwbacks couples tying the knot RN were loving, and you all were pretty into it (I mean, 90s anything is always killer)! So, today, in honor of #TBT, I figured it’d be a fun time to talk 1990s jams you need to work into your wedding.
If you were a kid, tween, teen in those days, you will love these songs forever - and even if you weren’t, you’ve heard them in the car and have instinctively started bobbing your head (regardless of whether they were Run-D.M.C. tracks or not). I had dozens of Now That’s What I Call Music! cds and they were my favorite possessions on Earth. "Rhythm Of The Night" = my anthem and it pretty much still does to this day.
Even now, whenever we get into the car, my 2-year-old son is subjected to 90s on 9 on Sirius Radio. The other day he said “mommy, I loveeeee this song” to Green Day’s “When I Come Around,” and I finally felt like everything was right in the world. #myboylikesmyboomboxhits.
In any case, before I get into all the stuff you’ll want to be sure your band or DJ has queued up for your day, I wanted to sound off on just a few of the reasons why 90s songs are so wedding worthy:
They were the soundtrack of your life…
Going back to my earlier statement, if you were a 90s kid, you and your friends used to have dance party sleepovers and stay up suuuuper late listening to music on your multi-cd changer stereo. If you were like me, you choreographed crazy amounts of Jock Jams-inspired dances with your girls in preparation for your school’s talent show - and they usually involved some sort of breakaway Adidas pants and glitter in your hair. Considering that, if the same people will be celebrating with you at your wedding, blasting those iconic songs will undoubtedly get everyone out on the dance floor. Nostalgia is everything to nuptials, after all.
Nearly everything was danceable…
Britney, Backstreet, Blackstreet, even things from Blind Melon were epically danceable and isn’t that what you want in a wedding playlist? For guests to want to be shaking their 🍑s all night long - only to break for bites and the bathroom? That’s what I wanted at my wedding, for sure. If your wedding is coming up and you’ve never had the pleasure of watching A Night at the Roxbury, please do yourself a favor and screen it some time this weekend. The Butabi brothers will legit make you wonder why your playlist isn’t 98° worth of awesomeness… sorry we had to.
First dance magic seriously came out of the 90s...
The Cranberries, Savage Garden, Journey, Edwin McCain, Lonestar, Sixpence None The Richer. If you haven’t decided on your first dance song yet, we’d be willing to bet that if you spent 10 minutes going through ANY 90s-specific Spotify playlist you’d decide on something right away. These are the songs you still sing in the shower (so, theoretically, you can sing them to her, too, right?), the ones that you’ll remember the lyrics to always forever…. Near and far closer together? Everywhere they will be with you, everything they will do for you. Pretty sure Donna Lewis’s words have welcomed soooo many newlyweds into the married club over the years.
