From the Bride:Gary and I met through mutual friends in Brooklyn. We had both been single for a little while, and once the flirtation started (which was a year or so after our first meeting), our relationship blossomed quickly. We are absolutely each other's best friends and both knew pretty quickly that we were happiest when adventuring through life together.

It was on one of those adventures, during a trip to Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, that Gary proposed. He then surprised me with a completely empty Storm King Art Center, that was ours to explore for the surprisingly sunny March day. These were two of our happy places, made even more joyous by Gary's thoughtful planning.

first look

Gary and I both wanted a wedding that was most importantly intimate, thoughtful, and fun. We live in Brooklyn, and originally considered having the wedding there. Along with our families, we decided that logistically it made more sense to have the wedding in Florida, near my hometown. We grew to love the idea of providing all of our friends and family with a mini vacation in the middle of April.

We knew we wanted a unique location for our wedding, which is a bit of a challenge in hotel-centric Florida. I loved the idea of a historic building because of my background in Art and Architectural History, and Gary loved the idea of a secluded environment away from the rest of the world. When we saw The Powel Crosley Estate in person for the first time, we knew it was perfect: this beautiful home with its relaxed elegance, sits right on a private stretch of land on the Sarasota Bay. It felt like old Florida, and combined with our amazing team of vendors, it allowed us to build the exact wedding we wanted.

The building really helped inspire our "Modern Vintage Florida" theme, paving the way for a festive and whimsical wedding day. We did not want the theme to outshine the real meaning of the day, but it united so many aspects of the wedding: our chuppah was beautifully designed with Florida Pine that we sourced from a local lumberyard, the lawn was scattered with copper-painted "pink flamingos," our escort cards were designed from vintage Florida postcards, and were supported by mini-oranges.

My parents, Gary and Gary's mom all pitched in with all my DIY ideas, including our hand-stamped menu's and the copper-leafed mini succulent pots. Some of the best planning moments were spent crafting with our parents while sharing a bottle of wine. The love we put into all the little projects really spread throughout the wedding day. All our efforts were rewarded when the patio was filled with our loved one's and their full bellies (filled with delicious food prepared by Fete Catering), dancing happily to a soundtrack provided by Clint Wiley's None Other.

There are really only two things I wish we would have done differently. The first would have been to keep a better watch on the time while we were getting ready. Even though everything seemed to be on time for most of the day and we had a well-planed timeline for the day, in the end the girls ran over with beautifying and getting dressed, and that ended up shortening our photography time. We did not get as many family and group shots as we would have liked. We had also hoped to get more photos with our friends. Our photographers did an amazing job, and our photos are so beautiful, it just would have been even better to get more of those VIPs captured.

The other thing I wished was different were the reception flowers. The colors were not what we had described to our florist and the containers were not exactly what we were expecting. Everything looked beautiful overall, but our color scheme of mint, aqua and salmon were not well captured in the flowers. There were also very specific types of flowers that I was looking forward to seeing in my bouquet and on the tables that were not there.
