Our meeting was a bit of a twist of fate. As gooey as that sounds, we’ve said it from the beginning! Alex is a dog trainer, and my brother-in-law had hired him online to train his new puppy. We met at their first lesson and he was informative and perfectly professional - but I’ll never forget his goodbye handshake; he looked me directly in the eye and said “it was so nice to meet you Melody” and lingered while holding my hand. Swoon.
We moved in together after just a few months, and 6 years later are living happily with our 2 cats and 2 dogs and proudly operating a business that helps people connect with their pets! Although life is a balance of joys and sorrows, love is such a gift, and we are grateful to be navigating it all together.
The Wedding Day
As many brides would say, my wedding day flew by in a flash! But there were also moments where time seemed to stand completely still, allowing me to soak in the energy of what was happening. I can remember the laugh of my girlfriends as they popped open the champagne, and the feeling of my sisters holding my hands before the First Look. I recall looking out at the mountains, thinking about our original destination wedding plans that by some miracle we were able to deconstruct and make into something new. And I can remember the feeling of the fabric as Alex and I bound our hands together - knowing I was about to begin the first page of the first chapter in a brand new book.
Paint it Black
I chose to wear a black dress to honor the truest version of myself and to shine a light on the fact that dark does not mean bad. I’ve spent most of my life feeling like an outcast, a black sheep, a misfit. I was always a way ‘too much’ or not enough - rarely fitting within the boundaries of who people wanted me to be. But when I wear black I feel powerful, I feel as though my sense of Self can’t be shaken. I feel beautiful.
The most sacred moments of our lives happen in the dark - we are born from our mother's wombs and return to the darkness of the earth. We close our eyes to be alone and find comfort in the dark when we kiss, cry, or make love. I knew in my heart that my wedding day would signify the death of who I was and the rebirth into who I was to become, so I wanted to honor that right of passage in something that made me feel embodied, and unapologetically myself.
