Make Sure the Flowers In Your Hair Match the Ones In Your Hand

fiftyflowers

Just a few weeks ago, we were saying how there should be a new ‘first look’ trend ALL about a bride’s wedding flowers. As much as she’s out-of-control thrilled to see her soon-to-be spouse, she’s also just as excited to see her floral designer arrive with her bouquet - it’s a moment, for sure. I can remember seeing my bouquet for the first time and freaking out over how gorgeous it was, I only wish I could have blown out those blooms a little more, and used them for accessorizing. A flower crown could work, yes, but I’m actually envisioning a hair piece that, when fashioned flawlessly, looks as if the flowers are just floating in the bride’s hair. THIS is major: and we’re sooo looking forward to seeing this trend of bouquet and hair piece matching take off ✈️. FiftyFlowers.com, our hook up in the wholesale flower world, helped us bring this dynamic DIY duo to life. We’d love to say that brides are the exclusive, lucky ones to try it out, but we’ve already been doing complementary things with fresh flowers for our hair and our home - and we didn’t need a wedding to make it happen!

Flowers on the brain can just as easily be flowers in your hair

I can’t be the only one who lost my s*** when I saw my bridal bouquet for the first time. Like, I was totally obsessed, and couldn’t wait to see how the rest of the flower power unfolded during the day - from my girls’ bouquets to the ceremony displays, reception centerpieces to the floral finishing touches on our escort card table, sweetheart table, card-collecting vintage birdcage, and our pastry pièce de résistance, a four-tiered wedding confection of perfection.

Too bad I never thought about working those flowers into my hair. I had a pretty embellished hair comb to hold up my curl-heavy, low, side-swept tresses, but I would have gotten ALL the extra points from some affixed florals. 100 percent.

Have a vision and run with it

We’re calling it now: matching your hair piece to your bouquet is going to be a trend not to miss in 2020, especially because it’s so all-encompassing. It’s ‘flowers, but make it fashion’ IRL and we love it.

… Now he’s what you want to keep in mind as you come up with your design.

  1. First, pick your bouquet style. For this project, we decided to go whimsical and feminine with some edge. Start out with your focal point flowers and a basic color palette. We knew we wanted white and muted tones, so we used the Quicksand Cream Roses ((had these in my own bouquet and they are STUNNING)) and Paper White Garden Roses as our muses and designed around those. Working with a combination of different roses gives that perfectly-imperfect, highly-dimensional look and that’s absolutely what we were going for.
  2. Next, we wanted to add in some filler flowers and longer stems, and we love the way Baby’s Breath and Stock White Flowers balance each other out. ((Side note: these two varieties also look beyond 🙌🙌🙌 with a lace gown)).
  3. Moving along, we thought it’d be fun to weave some boho intrigue into the bouquet, so we added some dried flowers that tailored some texture and depth. Fifty Flowers has a phenom collection of dried stems, we chose the Dried Straw Flower and the Pink Dried Canary Grass ((because it’s like little tufts of flossy cotton candy. And pink)).
  4. And to tie up the whole design, we brought in an unexpected bloom to give the bouquet a well-deserved pop: the Peachy Watermelon Ranunculus. The bunches that FF sends are amazing, because each stem has its own unique petal pigmentation and color makeup: check out our bouquet, we have some that are bright pink, deep peach, even a soft, like creamsicle orange.

Onto the steps, because we know you’re thirsting.

It’s because I said creamsicle, right?!? Knew it! 🍊🍨

The Bouquet

Grab one of each flower in your hand and grab your tape.

Start with your “statement flowers” in the middle and the filler/dried flowers on the outside

As you piece the stems together place them in your hand at an angle, this way you’re creating that pretty fanned-out shape we all love

Every 5-8 flowers, wrap the floral tape around the stems to hold the flowers in place (this helps the arrangement retain its shape and avoid slipping)

Continue inserting stems into your bouquet

Allow the filler/dried stems to pop out a bit more for that whimsical, ooh-that’s-fun look

Once you’re happy with how your bouquet looks, wrap up some more floral tape to hold everything together

Cut the stems down

Add your ribbon (we thought this lace would go beautifully with the baby’s breath and white stock!)

The Hair Piece

Pick your favorite flowers from your Fifty Flowers shipment ((you’ll obvi know your faves when you see them!)) We just loved how soft and romantic the look was with white garden roses and the quicksand cream rose as the center.

Start on one side of the hair comb and start placing the flowers and securing with tape into the teeth of the comb. ((Do NOT cut the tape!))

Once your focal point flowers are placed, grab your fillers/dried stems. You only need about 1-2 of each. Secure those stems with the tape into the teeth of the comb

Much like the bouquet, you’ll want to leave the filler/dried stems sticking out a little to mirror the look of the bouquet

Carefully place comb in bride’s hair

Let’s talk about keeping those flowers fresh AF…

They’re going to come carefully packaged from our friends at Fifty Flowers, but once they’re at your doorstep, it’s your turn to make sure they make it to the wedding in tip-top shape. Here’s how you’ll do that 💐💐💐

As soon as your package arrives, take all your flowers out of the box and proceed with these steps:

  1. Give each stem a trim
  2. Place the flowers in water with the flower food provided
  3. Keep in a cool room
  4. We suggest having your flowers arrive 2-4 days prior to your event. It will take a couple of days to get those babies lookin’ happy, refreshed, open, and even a little rested after their trip to your house! ((We got our flowers 4 days before this shoot and they looked absolutely beautiful and very happy)).

And how any bride should approach her DIY (whether she’s been doing this forever or considers herself a total DIY virgin)

An ode to brides who are designing their own wedding flowers: when you start picking out flowers from Fifty Flowers, drag the images from their site onto a doc on your computer. As you create a collage, you’ll start vision-boarding your design. This is actually one of the most fun parts of wedding planning (aside from cake tasting, of course). And, if you ever get stuck trying to decide what to pick out, Fifty Flowers has a live chat right on their site and they are sooo nice and helpful. It’s what we love about flower people, they only want to see us flourish!! 🙏
