Citrus Filled Capri Inspired Micro Backyard Wedding

Courtney Piccolo and Rich Behrens 07/17/2020

This bride's mom always joked as Courtney was growing up "Courtney, you are going to get married in our backyard someday!" Little did everyone know that covid 19 would make that prediction a reality for Courtney and Rich.

You're definitely going to want to keep scrolling to read their story and see all of the beautiful photos by I Heart My GroomMagnolia Event Design was there to plan every detail and Knot Just Flowers created all of the amazing florals. I Heart My Groom Films filmed this special day in the bride's family backyard. You can see all the images in the full gallery and hear all the derails from Magnolia Event Design.

The Dress

Lace, knee length open back by For Love and Lemons. For her something blue Courtney had her grandmother sew a baby blue poker chip into the back of the dress. The poker chip was her late brother Nick's. She had a jean jacket by Show Me Your Mumu that read- "Ride or Die" on the back for when the temperatures dropped in the evening.

The Stationery

We worked with Loly Orozco from Little Postage House to design all paper goods for Courtney and Rich's wedding from start to finish—everything from an illustrated save the date (that even included a sketch of the their pup, Leo!) to a full letterpress invitation suite that we will mail to their guests in connection with a larger celebration next year. For the micro wedding, Loly designed an elegant and modern invitation suite that she printed on clear lucite and that was displayed on a bed of dried orange and lemon slices. The invitations were accompanied by coral envelopes that featured white ink calligraphy by Kristen Martinez from Sprig & Fern Studio and a vintage postage collection that Loly Orozco from Little Postage House curated for our couple.

The Ceremony

Courtney and Rich were set to be married on June 6th, 2020, but when California announced "safer at home" in mid March we quickly had to pick a date with very little knowledge of the pandemic or the timeline of how long it would last,  so we decided to postpone to July.  Based on the news it seemed like the virus would disappear once it was hot and sunny- July made perfect sense.   We moved to mid July thinking that we would be in the clear and everything would be back to "normal" and guests would be able to fly in from around the country to celebrate with the happy couple.

Every vendor we had hired for their June wedding moved to the new date and we set out finalizing all the details of their new big day.  As June quickly approached and we were still "safer at home" we had to make a decision that was tough the first time and only harder the second time to postpone their large wedding.

As luck would have it, every vendor was available and moved to the new date in 2021.  We considered ourselves lucky.  The couple was healthy, their family and friends were healthy and our vendors made the postponement as easy as could be. Courtney and Rich still wanted to become legally married in 2020 and so we set out planning a mini wedding with their nearest and dearest, socially distanced.

Backyard Wedding

Courtney's mom used to joke that Courtney was going to get married in their backyard- and that is just what happened!  We paired down the vendor team and set out to design a mini wedding that would compliment the design of their big wedding, but would also stand alone and have its own special look. Courtney and Rich were on vacation in Italy when they first hired Magnolia Event Design in 2019.  Courtney would send me images of tile and Italian colors that she loved, so when I started designing their mini wedding I went back to where it all began- Italy.

We dreamed up a classic Capri-esque wedding filled with woven baskets of citrus fruit, aged wood tones, lanterns, candles and al fresco dining.  Courtney's wedding dress has been held up due to Covid 19, so she decided to wear the dress she had bought for her rehearsal dinner.
