There’s something distinctly Ralph Lauren about a wedding on the shores of Lake Michigan. The understated elegance, rich green accents, and classic American style feel right at home against the waterfront landscape. For Meg and Will, that aesthetic became the inspiration for a celebration in Lake Bluff, Illinois, complete with a ceremony overlooking the water and a spectacular clear-top reception tent planned with LOLA Event Productions and photographed by Olivia Leigh Weddings.
The couple embraced the beauty of their surroundings at Shoreacres while introducing sophisticated details, from Meg’s Mira Zwilinger gown and sweeping floral lace veil to a black-and-white checkered dance floor beneath elaborate chandeliers. And for two people who grew up just blocks apart, marrying along the lake that had been part of their lives for so long made the setting particularly meaningful.

A hometown connection years in the making
Meg and Will officially met on a dating app in 2020, but their story had roots stretching much further back.

Both grew up in Winnetka, Illinois, just a few blocks from one another. Despite sharing mutual friends and many of the same hometown experiences, they never actually met as children.

As they got to know each other, they discovered how closely their lives had overlapped. Three years after connecting, Will proposed at Meg’s grandmother’s home in Lake Forest, adding another special family location to their story.

When planning their wedding, the couple chose to remain close to those roots, celebrating in Lake Bluff along the shores of Lake Michigan.

A Mira Zwilinger gown and a dramatic floral lace veil
Meg wore a Mira Zwilinger gown for the ceremony, paired with an exceptionally long veil featuring delicate floral lace appliqués. The intricate detailing added a romantic touch to her bridal look, while the veil’s sweeping length created a striking silhouette against the open landscape.

Both Meg and Will later changed into new looks for their reception entrance, marking the transition from the waterfront ceremony to the evening’s festivities.

An intimate moment before a waterfront ceremony
Rather than arranging a traditional photographed first look, Meg and Will chose to spend a private moment together before their ceremony. It became one of the day’s emotional highlights, giving them time to connect away from the excitement of the celebration.

Their ceremony took place on a platform built along the shoreline, with the expansive lake serving as the backdrop. Ivory flowers and greenery arranged in pots dotted the surrounding grass, bringing a gentle softness to the setting without distracting from the natural scenery.
The restrained floral design reflected the couple’s vision of effortless elegance, allowing the waterfront location to speak for itself.

After exchanging vows, Meg and Will slipped away again, this time to enjoy cocktails and appetizers together before rejoining their guests. These quieter moments became some of their favorite memories from the day.

The clear-top tent reveal was a dream wedding moment
Much of the wedding planning centered on the reception tent from Blue Peak Tents, making its finished reveal one of Meg’s most anticipated moments.

Guests first encountered a gallery wall of family photographs, a thoughtful display that brought generations of memories into the celebration. Beyond it waited an entirely different kind of statement: a clear-top tent layered with flowing drapery, elaborate chandeliers, and deep green accents.

The color palette complemented the surrounding landscape and the earliest hints of fall, while the mix of tailored details and soft fabrics captured the couple’s Ralph Lauren-inspired vision.

At the center of the space, a black-and-white checkered dance floor introduced a bold graphic contrast. The pattern brought a touch of old-school glamour to the reception, grounding the more romantic elements of the design.
With Lake Michigan visible beyond the tent, the entire setting felt connected to the place Meg and Will had chosen to celebrate.

A lively reception filled with music and familiar faces
As the evening unfolded, the checkered dance floor became the heart of the party.

A live band brought energy to the reception, with family members and friends making appearances on stage throughout the night. These performances added an especially personal dimension to the entertainment, turning the celebration into something more spontaneous and memorable.

The atmosphere balanced the sophistication of the setting with the warmth of a gathering among people who had known the couple throughout different chapters of their lives.

From the family photographs welcoming guests to the familiar faces joining the band, the reception made room for both tradition and genuine fun.

A classic celebration rooted in home
Meg and Will’s wedding was shaped as much by their history as by their design inspiration. They had grown up in the same neighborhood without knowing one another, eventually connected years later, and returned to the North Shore to celebrate their marriage.

Their Lake Bluff wedding captured that sense of place beautifully. The ceremony embraced the quiet romance of the shoreline, while the reception brought a more dramatic expression of classic American elegance.

For Meg and Will, the day was an opportunity to celebrate where they came from, the people who helped shape their lives, and the future they would share together.
