This Texas-inspired rehearsal dinner had a state-shaped cake and a cardinal with a story

Share

A chocolate cake shaped like Texas and dotted with miniature landmarks might not sound like the obvious opening act for a formal black-tie wedding. For Alexis Morreale and Jesse Willis, that was exactly the point.

The night before their Dallas wedding, the couple welcomed guests to Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco for a rehearsal dinner photographed by John Cain Photography and intentionally designed with Delia Jeffcoat Events to feel different from the celebration that would follow. With friends and family arriving from Louisiana, Buffalo, and beyond, many experiencing Texas for the first time, Alexis wanted Friday night to feel like a relaxed and gracious introduction to the state.

The wedding itself would embrace a timeless palette of white, pale pink, gold, and crystal. The rehearsal dinner gave her room to go greener, warmer, and a little more playful.

Green-and-white tables brought an organic feel to the country club

A country club felt particularly fitting for Alexis and Jesse, who live on a golf course at home in Shreveport.

Stonebriar offered the green views and easy atmosphere Alexis wanted, giving guests a place to “let their hair down a little bit” after traveling.

Delia Jeffcoat Events layered patterned green-and-white linens from BBJ La Tavola with sage napkins, gilded chargers, and delicate glassware. Luxe Petals filled the tables with white roses, hydrangea, and airy greenery, while candlelight warmed the room as evening settled in.

The green-and-white china became more than a rental decision. When Alexis and her family realized purchasing the collection would cost about the same as renting it, they bought the pieces outright, allowing something from the rehearsal dinner to reappear at family gatherings for years to come.

A cardinal motif carried a memory from their proposal

One of the smallest design details held one of the weekend’s most personal stories.

Stamped Paper Co. incorporated red cardinals outlined in gold into the rehearsal dinner paper goods, a motif connected to Jesse’s proposal months earlier.

The couple had traveled to Three Sisters Island near Niagara Falls in December to celebrate Alexis’s grandfather’s 99th birthday. Jesse proposed as snow began to fall, and when they returned to their car afterward, they noticed several cardinals gathered nearby in the snow.

Both Alexis and Jesse had lost grandparents, and Alexis interpreted their appearance as a sign. Incorporating the cardinal into the rehearsal dinner allowed that quiet moment from their engagement to become part of the wedding weekend without overwhelming the larger design.

The menu welcomed guests to Texas through Southern comfort food

When Alexis and Jesse met with Stonebriar’s chef, they asked a simple question: What do you do best?

The answer was barbecue.

That down-to-earth spirit was exactly what Alexis wanted for the night before a formal wedding, and the menu evolved into an elevated take on Southern comfort food. Guests were served dishes including buttermilk fried chicken with malted waffles and spiced honey, seared crab cakes with sweet corn purée, and farm-to-table greens and vegetables.

Rather than replicating the formality planned for the following evening, dinner gave out-of-town guests their first taste of the couple’s Texas wedding weekend in a way that felt warm and familiar.

A Texas-shaped groom’s cake gave Jesse his own moment

The groom’s cake took the evening’s Texas inspiration much more literally.

Dallas Affaires Cake Co. created a chocolate cake shaped like the state itself, complete with landmarks stretching from Dallas to San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

Alexis and Jesse intentionally served the groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner rather than the wedding reception, giving Jesse a detail and moment that belonged specifically to him.

The playful cake also reinforced the night’s larger purpose. Friday wasn’t intended to preview Saturday. It had its own personality.

An acoustic trio kept the evening easygoing

The night’s entertainment followed the same relaxed approach. A cocktail trio from Intensity Bands performed acoustic arrangements with touches of country and contemporary music. Rather than turning the rehearsal dinner into a full-scale party, the music provided a soundtrack that allowed guests to linger over dinner and conversation.

Decorative cookies from Cookie Deaux and chocolate-dipped pretzels from JJ’s Sweet Treats DFW added a few more playful treats to the evening.

A sculptural Nardos mini balanced bridal and playful

Alexis also used the rehearsal dinner as an opportunity to have more fun with bridal fashion.

She wore a sculptural white Nardos mini dress with a dramatic train, paired with Christian Louboutin shoes. The look still read unmistakably bridal, but its shorter silhouette and statement proportions suited the less formal mood of Friday night.

Like the green tables, Southern menu, and Texas-shaped cake, her fashion established the rehearsal dinner as its own celebration rather than a smaller version of what guests would see the next day.

The contrast was intentional from the beginning. Saturday would bring white, pale pink, gold, crystal, and black-tie formality. Friday belonged to green patterned linens, comfort food, country music, Texas landmarks, and a red cardinal carrying a deeply personal memory.

For Alexis and Jesse, the rehearsal dinner didn’t need to foreshadow the wedding. It simply needed to welcome everyone to Texas, bring their people around the table, and give the weekend a warm first chapter before everything changed gears the following day.
