A Chicago history museum wedding that blended garden romance with vintage glamour

Share

Olivia and Matt’s relationship felt certain almost from the moment it began. The two met on Hinge and planned their first date at a cocktail bar in Chicago, where Olivia found herself texting her friends mid-date about how much she liked Matt. Meanwhile, Matt was attempting to play it cool, privately convinced Olivia was out of his league.

Within just a couple of months, conversations about marriage had already begun. The clarity surprised even them, but Matt still managed to catch Olivia completely off guard when it came time to propose.

He planned an elaborate proposal at the Alfred Caldwell Lily Gardens, coordinating family members, multiple locations, and even Olivia’s dad hiding among the foliage with a camera. Despite a few near-misses that threatened the surprise, everything came together as planned, ending with both of their families gathered to celebrate.

That same balance of intention and ease carried into their wedding at the Chicago History Museum, captured by Studio This is Photography, where garden-party romance met vintage glamour for an autumn celebration filled with personal details, family history, and plenty of Chicago character.

Garden-party romance meets vintage glamour

Olivia and Matt envisioned their wedding as a blend of romantic garden style and vintage glamour, an aesthetic that felt particularly fitting against the historic setting of the museum.

Rather than relying on design alone to give the day meaning, the couple incorporated details that connected their wedding to the generations that came before them. Olivia wore her grandmother’s pearl earrings and wrapped a strip of her mother’s wedding gloves around her bouquet. Matt carried his own family history with him by wearing his father’s wedding band.

These subtle heirlooms gave the celebration an additional layer of significance, allowing pieces of their families’ stories to become part of their own.

A floral chuppah and a ceremony honoring both families

A lush floral chuppah became the focal point of Olivia and Matt’s ceremony, bringing the garden-inspired aesthetic into the historic venue while also honoring Olivia’s Jewish background.

The ceremony thoughtfully incorporated traditions from both sides of their families. The couple included the Jewish tradition of breaking the glass, while Matt’s mother read an Irish blessing, creating a ceremony that reflected both of their backgrounds without losing its sense of intimacy.

Surrounded by their closest friends and family, Olivia and Matt made the traditions their own, bringing together heritage, family, and the relationship that had felt so certain from the beginning.

Cocktails on the museum patio

After the ceremony, guests moved outside for cocktail hour on the museum patio. As the night went on, a full moon rose over Chicago as everyone gathered for drinks on the warm autumn evening, adding an unexpectedly romantic backdrop to the celebration.

The outdoor cocktail hour also brought the city itself into the experience. Chicago was not simply where Olivia and Matt chose to marry. It was where their relationship began, from that first cocktail-bar date to the life they had built together, making the city a natural part of the story of their wedding.

A reception with a distinctly Chicago ending

As the evening moved into the reception, the garden-party romance and vintage glamour of the day gave way to a celebration that felt increasingly relaxed and personal.

Later in the night, mini Chicago-style hot dogs were passed around to guests, adding a playful local touch and bringing the celebration back to the city where Olivia and Matt’s story began. It was the kind of detail that felt unmistakably Chicago without competing with the elegance of the rest of the wedding.

Throughout the day, the couple struck that balance beautifully. The lush floral chuppah and romantic setting created visual impact, while heirlooms, family traditions, and local details made the celebration unmistakably theirs.

The following morning brought one final connection to family. Just hours after the wedding ended, Olivia and Matt’s niece was born, turning an already meaningful weekend into the beginning of another chapter for their family.

For a couple whose relationship had felt certain almost from their first date, their Chicago History Museum wedding celebrated more than the beginning of a marriage. From Olivia’s grandmother’s pearls and her mother’s wedding gloves to Matt’s father’s ring, a ceremony honoring both families, and the arrival of a new generation the following morning, the celebration beautifully connected everything that had come before with everything still ahead.
