This sentimental Martha’s Vineyard wedding was a love letter to the island

Share

When Emily and Aidan met while working as healthcare consultants, their first date at Tia’s on the Boston Waterfront was supposed to be just one drink. Three hours later, it was clear neither was quite ready for the night to end. Before long, they were spending nearly every day together. Less than a year into their relationship, Emily was offered her dream job in New York City, and Aidan moved alongside her as they began a new chapter together in the Big Apple.

Three years later, he brought their story back to where it began. Under the guise of attending a family engagement party, Aidan took Emily to the spot of their first kiss and proposed as their families watched from a nearby balcony. Photographers then guided the newly engaged couple back to Tia’s, where the “family engagement party” turned out to be their own, surrounded by the people they loved most.

A Martha’s Vineyard wedding rooted in sentiment

Martha’s Vineyard has long held a special place in Emily and Aidan’s relationship, making the island a natural choice for a wedding centered on joy, connection, and togetherness.

They gathered their loved ones at the historic Dr. Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown, viewing the celebration as a rare opportunity to bring everyone important to them into one place. Rather than simply borrowing from the island as a beautiful backdrop, Emily and Aidan wanted the wedding to reflect their own connection to it.

The result was a celebration, planned with help from Island Dreams Event Design and photographed by Larisa Stinga, filled with details that felt unmistakably Martha’s Vineyard, but even more unmistakably theirs.

Lighthouse portraits in the sand

Before their outdoor garden ceremony, Emily and Aidan stole away for portraits along the shoreline. With their feet in the sand and one of Martha’s Vineyard’s iconic lighthouses rising behind them, the photographs captured the sense of place that had inspired so much of the wedding. The coastal setting required little embellishment, offering a quiet pause together before they returned to their guests to exchange vows.

Handmade details inspired by the island

Some of the most memorable wedding details came directly from Emily and her family. Emily hand-stitched needlepoint table numbers, adding a beautifully personal layer to the reception tables.

She and Aidan also created a decoupaged oyster shell display featuring motifs pulled directly from their invitation suite, carrying the stationery design into an element rooted in the island’s coastal character.

Her father contributed another handmade detail for cocktail hour: a custom cornhole set finished with Emily and Aidan’s wedding crest. Together, the pieces felt less like traditional DIY wedding projects and more like a collection of family-made keepsakes – details created specifically for this day and this place.

A second look made from her mother’s wedding dress

One of the day’s most sentimental moments arrived during the reception when Emily disappeared for an outfit change. She returned wearing a shortened, modernized version of her mother’s wedding dress.

The transformation had been a complete secret. Unbeknownst to her mother, Emily had taken the gown from her parents’ basement and brought it to a tailor, who updated the silhouette while preserving the character of the original dress. More than simply a vintage second look, the dress allowed Emily to carry a tangible piece of her family’s history into a new generation – and made the reveal all the more emotional for her mother.

A surprise sing-along from her father

Emily wasn’t the only one keeping a meaningful surprise. Her father had quietly coordinated with the wedding band and guests to plan a room-wide performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” a song with deep significance to their family.

Following his speech, the music began and the entire room joined together in song. “In that moment, we felt completely loved,” Emily and Aidan shared. It was exactly the kind of unscripted, deeply personal experience they had hoped their wedding would create: everyone they loved gathered together, participating in a memory that belonged entirely to them.

A love letter to Martha’s Vineyard – and to family

For Emily and Aidan, the beauty of their Martha’s Vineyard wedding wasn’t defined by a single design moment. It was found in the lighthouse behind their portraits, oyster shells decorated by hand, needlepoint stitched by the bride, a cornhole set built by her father, and a mother’s wedding dress given an entirely new chapter.

The island provided the setting, but family gave the celebration its heart. And when an entire room joined together to sing a song that had meant so much to them for years, the intention behind the day became beautifully clear.

Their wedding wasn’t simply held on Martha’s Vineyard. It honored the memories they had already made there while creating a whole new collection to return to for years to come.
