For Cara and Hank, choosing where to marry was never simply about finding a beautiful venue—it was about honoring the places and people that shaped their story.
With Cara completing her residency at Johns Hopkins during an especially demanding season of life, the couple found the perfect balance of practicality and sentiment by celebrating on Gibson Island at Gibson Island Club. Long cherished by Cara’s family, the waterfront community offered more than breathtaking Chesapeake Bay views; it provided a meaningful setting where generations of memories could become part of the beginning of their own.
The result was an elegant coastal wedding planned with Arney Walker and photographed by Liz Banfield that was defined by quiet luxury, intentional design, and an enduring sense of home.

Featured designer: Oscar de la Renta

Cara’s bridal style embodied classic sophistication. She wore an exquisite Oscar de la Renta gown from Carine’s Bridal, pairing timeless craftsmanship with effortless elegance.

Her three sisters served as bridesmaids, each selecting a coordinating gown from different designers. The varied silhouettes created a cohesive yet personal bridal party aesthetic that felt polished without appearing overly uniform.

A ceremony location from in the family
The ceremony unfolded on the sloping lawn of Cara’s grandmother’s waterfront home, where panoramic views of the Chesapeake Bay provided a naturally stunning backdrop.

Rather than competing with the landscape, an open pavilion-style tent was thoughtfully positioned to frame the water, allowing the scenery to remain the defining feature of the ceremony. The restrained design reflected the couple’s appreciation for timeless elegance, proving that remarkable settings often require only the lightest touch.

Cocktail hour & reception at Gibson Island Club

Following the ceremony, guests made their way to the Gibson Island Club, where the evening’s next chapter began with one of the celebration’s most memorable design moments.

A classic Sperry archway was transformed into an immersive entrance, softly illuminated with suspended candles and cascading vines that guided guests into the reception. The installation established an intimate atmosphere while introducing the refined aesthetic that carried throughout the ballroom.

Inside, the reception balanced coastal sophistication with thoughtful restraint, allowing candlelight, natural textures, and elegant floral accents to create an inviting setting for dinner and dancing.

Organic floral design & a coastal motif

The floral design by Sophie Felts embraced the surrounding landscape with an organic approach that felt as though it had always belonged there.

Birch trees, abundant greenery, and airy floral arrangements softened the ceremony and reception spaces without obstructing the sweeping waterfront views. Reception centerpieces remained intentionally delicate, preserving open sightlines across the tables while reinforcing the celebration’s understated coastal aesthetic.

Subtle heron motifs appeared throughout the wedding as a meaningful tribute to Gibson Island’s native wildlife. Sculptural herons welcomed guests during the ceremony before finding a permanent home on the family property, creating a lasting reminder of the day for generations to come.

A wedding cake surprise
Dessert concluded the evening with a chocolate buttercream wedding cake from Cake by Jason that delivered one final unexpected memory.
