Darcy and Brandi’s Real Life Sunrise Proposal in the Rain at Haiku Stairs

Share

Heart-shaped hands frame couple on stairs

Darcy and I met two weeks after I moved to Chicago (from California) for my PhD. We met on a rugby team we both joined. I had a conference I was scheduled to present at in Hawaii and she expressed interest in wanting to join me on the trip … she also suggested we invite all of our best friends to come along with us. Fast forward to February 2014 and there we all were in Oahu, HI. We rented a house and made exciting plans to snorkel, swim with sharks and hike to the top of the Haiku Stairs … also known as the Stairway to Heaven. I love adventure, the outdoors and trying new things…and Darcy knew all of that about me. The hike which is surreal, like out of this world surreal, was planned to be done at night, so we could arrive to watch the sunrise.

Rainy proposal: Man kneeling, woman smiling happily

THE PROPOSAL AT HAIKU STAIRS

After climbing 3,992 stairs up the side of cliffs and mountains … we made it, but we still had several hours until sunrise. Fortunately for us our group of besties brought along a speaker and awesome music…so what did we do while waiting for the sun to rise??? We had a dance party!! As the sun was close to rising we paused our dance party and realized we were so high in the sky that the clouds were going to block our view of the sun … this is when Darcy announced, “Okay guys, its time!” I interpreted this as, “Okay guys, its time to start our descent.” Instead, Darcy took me by the hand, as our friends circled around the two of us, and she got down on one knee, and told me how much she loved me (clearly enough to hike into the clouds even when she is afraid of heights) and how she couldn’t wait to spend the rest of her life with me … and then she said, “So, I wanted to know if you would marry me?” I laughed, cried and then said, “Of course I will!” Our friends, all part of the plan, hiked with music, speakers, champagne and banners. We toasted, celebrated, danced and then hiked back down to begin the rest of our forever.
