This Gem of a Bride Wore Her Grandmother’s 1960s Gown

So, we’re total suckers for a good first look photo. That moment when a bride and groom see each other for the first time is all kinds of magic. But this example of a bride surprising her grandmother by wearing her 1960s wedding dress is pretty much our favorite. It doesn’t take much to see why, TBH.

On the night before her Sept. 23rd wedding, 23-year-old Boise bride, Jordyn Cleverly, planned a surprise that was basically made-for-the-movies. She and her photographer, Kortney Peterson, decided to do it before the ceremony because they didn’t want to overwhelm her sweet grandma, Penny Jensen.

Jensen wore the A-line, lace-sleeved gown to her own wedding in 1962, and told her son (Jordyn’s father) that she would donate the dress if his daughters didn’t want to wear it.

Cleverly told the Idaho Statesman that her grandmother graciously vowed “Even if they want to cut it up and make a pillow, that’s OK.”

Luckily it didn’t have to come to that, because after wading through what seemed like 30 gowns and pushing the wedding out a year in search of “the perfect one” Cleverly remembered her grandmother’s gown. She poo-pooed the many dry cleaners who said they wouldn’t touch the dress in fear of the fickle fabric and aging lace, and found a daring seamstress in Caldwell who committed to the cause.

Despite Kandee Harris’ hesitancies towards the lace that she said could ‘blow out,’ she altered the gown to fit a smaller frame and turned out a total miracle for the soon-to-be-married Mrs. Cleverly. 

Capturing the first look between Jordyn and her grandmother, who they persuaded to leave the rehearsal dinner on the premise of having her ‘approve’ a photo that would be displayed of her in her gown on her own wedding day, was pure bliss!

Tears flowed as the photos were snapped, and the love between this dynamic duo was on fire!
