An Associate Member of the Royal Academy of Needlework, Sybil Francis was one of the first needlewomen in England. In the 1930’s, she embroidered a pillow that was translated into a copper print engraving and the first Aves dinnerware was produced. Black Aves with Gold was created at Gump’s request and launched as an exclusive for the store in 1987. A monochrome design with 22kt gold edges, the pattern represents the birds of paradise and was originally inspired by silk embroidery.
