DIY Tape Art Invitations: Inspired by Maya Hayuk for a Colorful Wedding

Share

Outdoor table setting with colorful flowers and table runner

All of this tape inspired art came about from a piece by Brooklyn artist Maya Hayuk, a work with overlapping stripes in brilliant colors. Her mesmerizing art inspired REVEL to create this brilliant outdoor party. They created this shoot by painting various items – invitations, place cards, a fabric table runner, bud vases, favor boxes, and a big canvas backdrop with fuchsia, marigold, teal, and burgundy stripes. A little masking tape, some rulers, and pencil does wonders!
Adding in some brilliant flowers from Michelle Edgemont, and a tasty dessert bar with matching striped cakes from Lael Cakes, and mini brownies from Honeybee Brownies;  the scene is now set for a casual wedding, or the perfect shower. There’s even something for the boys – the Moscow Mule cocktail with Aylesbury Duck Vodka and Reed’s Ginger Beer. All beautifully photographed by brklyn view photography.

Such a fantastic and easy idea … right? Thanks so much to REVEL for all this prettiness.  You can repeat the below tutorial to create a large backdrop – they used paint canvas and fabric paint, or a runner (same paint, on a white runner). Bombs away! Read on for exact tutorial.

Here is what you are going to need in order to make your own tape art diy invitation.
White cardstock cut to size desired (these invitations are 5 x 7″) | Scissors | Paint in desired colors (Acrylic paint for paper, fabric paint for fabrics) | Paint brushes | Painters tape | Clear ruler | Pencil | Newspaper

1. Decide how wide you would like each of your stripes to be and what angles you want to play with. Our stripes are 1/8 of an inch wide and 1/8 of an inch apart and use a clear ruler and a pencil. Lightly draw out all your desired stripes  Tip* (To help keep track of which stripe should be which color, it may be helpful to lightly mark each stripe with a number or initial before you begin painting)
2. Place your invitation on top of newspaper and tape off both sides of your first stripe.
3. Paint your first color (dark pink here) and allow to dry 5-10 minutes
4. After checking to be sure the paint is dry, remove the tape to reveal your first clean, bright stripe.
5. Tape off second color line, being careful to seal the tape, but try not to press too hard onto the fresh paint.
6. Paint second color and allow to try 10-15 minutes
7. Continue taping off and painting your stripes until you’ve achieved the desired effect.
8. Congratulations, you’ve made your own modern invitations!
