Kentucky Derby Wedding Ideas

On the first Saturday of every May, a time-honored tradition unfolds – The Kentucky Derby. The air is filled with an electric blend of excitement and anticipation. Mint Juleps flow freely, their refreshing sweetness mingling with the scent of blooming roses. A sea of dapper suits and fashion-forward hats adorns the grandstands, where a kaleidoscope of colors converges.

With every thunderous gallop, history is made on the tracks, and as the hooves cross the finish line, cheers erupt like a symphony of celebration. The Kentucky Derby isn't merely a horse race; it's a tapestry of style, culture, and the timeless thrill of sport, where tradition dances hand in hand with the contemporary spirit of revelry.

Spring wedding decor ideas

Pink & Yellow were chosen as the colors because of their nod to spring. We played everything off of those two colors with the addition of white details as well. I had a great time making menus and other various paper goods for the shoot, all horse-inspired as well! I purchased some vintage postcards to also tie in with the classy-vintage southern wedding theme.

All the flowers were also a nod to spring by choosing what was available this time of year in the color scheme with bits of mint added in to make them tie in a bit with the mint julep. Mint Juleps are the signature drink of the derby to it was fun to tie them into the design with the flowers and with the juleps themselves. The pecan pies were completely inspired by all the southern traditions that go along with the derby. There is just something so romantic feeling about southern traditions, a great theme to go with for wedding inspiration for sure!

Classic Mint Julep

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 oz Bourbon
  • 8-10 Fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 oz Simple syrup (1:1 water and sugar)
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprigs, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Begin by placing the fresh mint leaves and simple syrup in a julep cup or a glass.
  2. Gently muddle the mint leaves to release their essential oils. Be careful not to shred the mint, as this can make the drink bitter.
  3. Fill the glass with crushed ice. Pack it in gently but firmly.
  4. Pour the bourbon over the ice. Use a good-quality bourbon for the best flavor.
  5. Stir the ingredients together using a bar spoon. The ice will begin to chill the mixture and dilute it slightly.
  6. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. Slap the mint between your palms to release its aroma before placing it in the drink.
  7. Insert a short straw or a straw cut to the appropriate length so you can enjoy the aroma of the mint as you sip the drink.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing and classic Mint Julep!

The Mint Julep is a classic cocktail associated with the American South and is particularly popular during the Kentucky Derby. Its combination of fresh mint, bourbon, and sweetness makes it a delightful and iconic drink. Cheers!
