With friends and family living all over the world, this fun couple decided to have a destination wedding in a location that would be a nice vacation for all of their guests. The experts at VP Events helped Edward and Gloria put together a bright, colorful wedding that was full of personal touches. Edward proposed to Gloria in January of 2012 on the second anniversary of their first date. As LA transplants and with family and friends coming from the Mid-West, East Coast, England, Canada, Australia, and Ghana, they wanted to have a wedding in a destination that would be a vacation for their guests and give them a taste of California. They chose Santa Barbara (where they enjoyed their first weekend getaway together) and the Bacara Resort.

The cliff top setting for the ceremony was the perfect site to cap off their beachside wedding week that included a beach barbecue, wine tasting in the Santa Ynez Valley, croquet and champagne, and golf at nearby Sandpiper. Gloria and Edward wanted their ceremony and reception to be a celebration with bright colors, a fun atmosphere and some personal touches.

Their signature cocktail was Pimm’s Cup — a nod to the half-British groom; they had a caricature artist sketching portraits of their guests throughout the night; they cut the cake with Edward’s grandfather’s West Point sword; and they served mini versions of their favorite desserts late into the night — crème brulee, peanut butter & chocolate tortes, and macaroons.

From the Bride:
I guess I would have wanted one more hour on the dance floor! In retrospect, I am really glad we had all of the pre and post wedding activities so we really had a chance to talk with all of our guests, many of whom had traveled from all over the globe!

We love the idea of having a caricature artist at your wedding reception. Not only is it something fun and original for your guests to enjoy, but also a unique wedding favor.

One of the personal touches in Edward and Gloria’s wedding celebration was using the West Point sword that belonged to Edward’s grandfather to cut their gorgeous wedding cake — which is so much more fun than a traditional cake knife and a great way to incorporate a unique part of your family history into your special day!

Although they both come from families in the the dairy farming business, Annelise and Blake left the cows and rustic country living at home on their special day. Instead, this couple’s wedding was a posh event filled with bright colors and dramatic lighting.

By pulling various attributes from the couple, the amazingly talented Craig Edwards’ Events created a breathtaking setting for the bride and groom to celebrate with their friends and family. From Craig Edwards:
Both Annelise and Blake come from large, tight-knit dairy farming families. When designing this event I pulled elements out of the bride and groom and that is specific to them and their lives. The invitations set the tone. We use high end paper with white foiling, and carried that feel and theme all the way through; a sense of family, closeness, romance, and elegance.

The goal was to make the venue look like something no one ever had seen before. We opted for family style seating with long sections of tables allowing people who have not seen each other for a while to catch up or to create new friendships.

For a casual approach to assigned tables, we used the same font as the invitations, and had the designer hand write names and table number on chalk boards painted out and written in grey pencil. We set them near the entrance to the dining room.

I also wanted to black out the venue to make the vastness of it disappear and give it a sex appeal. The tables were pin-lit added another element of style. We kept the farm feel (without having to bring in the cows and hay) by renting 15 foot trees and have them placed in between the rows of tables. Up lighting created even more drama.

For the flower arrangements we used mercury glass vases and lined the center of the tables with the vases stuff with dahlias, gardens roses, black calla lilies and trick all on top of black linen tables. We placed candles on the tables to bring in yet another light element and to soften some of the dark edges.

While this bride is more of a girly girl and loves anything that sparkles, Justin, her husband, is a huge outdoorsman and country boy at heart. It was with these ideas in mind that they found Crooked Willow Farms online, a venue that clearly represented both of them. The unique yet darling mixture of chic and country made for a gorgeous occasion.

From the Bride:
When we arrived at the venue, we were immediately blown away. The rustic red stables, beautiful show horses, and Rocky Mountains gave it the country feel Justin was looking for. All the while, I fell in love with the gorgeous rod iron chandeliers, flower-filled gardens, and newly designed renovations that reflected the elegance and sparkle I had thought of. It was the perfect mixture of country and flair that we had in mind for our big day.

Not wanting to compete with the beauty of the venue, I kept the decor very simple. For our ceremony, we hung crystal chandeliers and sheer draping tied with burlap ribbon to the altar. I also made a sign out of burlap triangles. We draped it across the aisle to keep the guests from walking on the rose petals. The flowers were another one of my top priorities, and they were nothing short of amazing. They consisted of mostly hydrangeas, which are my absolute favorite. The florist also added branches to the arrangements to add a rustic touch.

My grandma, mom, and I made burlap table runners for each of the reception tables. We also made “MR” and “MRS” letters out of faux pearls to hang on the back of our chairs, and we glued faux pearls to the table numbers. The rustic touches of branches, barns, and boots, mixed with pearls, crystals, and chandeliers, were incredible.

Two signature drinks were served during the cocktail hour and reception. My signature drink was a delicious blueberry mojito, the Something Blue-berry Mojito. Justin’s cocktail, the Muirski Palmer, was named after his nickname and passion for golf. It was here that we were able to tie in more personal touches in a very subtle manor. All said and done, it was the wedding of our dreams. We couldn’t have asked for anything more!

John proposed to Ellen while at an outdoor concert, under the Super Moon — fitting for this couple who each have personalities that are larger than life. Their wedding was equally as impressive, with dramatic vintage style and elaborate DIY details. Read on to hear from Ellen about their special day, including their full budget breakdown. Ellen’s vintage-styled wedding dress was designed by the amazing Tadashi Shoji. Eric Rey, of Fusion Hair Design, expertly fashioned her classic vintage look that perfectly complimented the fascinator and birdcage that the bride created herself! Ellen also created her beautiful brooch bouquet and knitted the boutonnieres.

Ellen and John’s reception was held at the Winter Park Farmers’ Market in Winter Park, Florida and catered by 4 Rivers Smokehouse. Vintage items, yellow flowers and burlap table runners decorated the tables along with a jar of honey wedding favor at each place setting. Each table number was indicated by a cute chalkboard that matched the larger menu sign.

From the Bride:
As far as if I would have done anything differently, I’m not really sure that I would have. Everything that I wanted to do, I did and it all went off without too many hitches. ;) I think I would have enjoyed a longer reception, but I was working withing the time frame of the venue. Other than that, I loved every minute of it!

This Bride was super lucky — not only was she about to marry the man of her dreams, but her talented sister threw her an amazing Bridal Shower. Barbara’s sister, Adrienne, works for Cherish Paperie … so it was no surprise that paper products played a large roll in the decorations. Using a color palette of gray and yellow, this event is full of beautiful signs and a variety of vintage decor that is sure to inspire! The tables, chairs and other vintage decor were rented from Archive Vintage Rentals, truly transforming this backyard into a chic party venue. The tables were decorated with a large assortment of white, yellow and black vintage vases that ranged in both size and style creating an eclectic feel. An array of cacti, succulence and yellow flowers from Krista Jon Florals filled the vases adding a touch of nature to the tablescapes. The tables were also decorated with signs displaying facts about the bride allowing the guests to get to know the bride better — a great idea for a bridal shower with vast guest list that includes her future relatives!

Golden Margarita Recipe:
1 1/2 shots tequila
1 1/2 shots Grand Marnier® orange liqueur
1 shot lime juice
1 shot sweet and sour mix

Shake ingredients vigorously with crushed ice in a shaker glass, and pour over crushed ice in a lightly salted margarita glass. Garnish with a twist of lime and serve with two cocktail straws. Signature drinks are a good way to personalize your event or reinforce a particular theme. This bridal shower had a “Margarita Bar” consisting of two types of margaritas. Other beverages were provided as well — kept cold in an old vintage bathtub, which is so much more interesting than just a bunch of coolers! Keeping for a recipe so you can make Golden Margaritas at home.

A vintage desk was used as a cake table…with a perfect place to keep the napkins from blowing away. Along with vintage decorations, the cake table displayed a yellow and gray macaroon tower and beautiful yellow ombré cake created by Sweet and Saucy Shop.

From the Bride:
My shower was a wonderful surprise for me, not the party but the details. It was perfect from the food to the decor. An amazing day of family and friends with so much detail in the paper products from the banners to the straws … I was blown away. The decor was amazing, too — so beautiful and exactly opposite of what I wanted for my wedding so it was so great to get to have a different “theme.” I loved the gray and yellow together and Preppy Chic and Krista Jon‘s styling was beyond magical with the mix matched pieces —  loved it! I teared up when I arrived, I couldn’t believe it was all for me.

Jimmy and Andrea really wanted their wedding to be a celebration that reflected themselves along with their friends and families. They achieved this by including personalized and meaningful elements along with DIY projects that were created by people they were close to, ultimately creating a casual yet chic event.

From the Bride:
Aesthetically, we originally were searching desperately for a barn that would accommodate a wedding of 200+. For months we tried to make that work but it never worked out. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to use a yellow and gray color scheme, and originally in the barn location that would translate to a pretty casual, shabby chic event.

We then found out that the Mansfield Art Center could accommodate our group, but moving the reception to a fairly modern art gallery necessitated a change in the aesthetic. We weren’t hoping for a graphic, ultra modern yellow and gray scheme, so we knew we had to add another color to the palette to soften it. We ended up using plenty of blush and beige in the mix to soften the space and the event to a more romantic, organic feel.

I found all of the bridesmaid dresses through Target, H&M & Simply Vera by Vera Wang, all of them costing less than $40. I wanted them to be cohesive in color palette but personalized in style.

My mom and I made all the bouquets from fabric and mine had a pin that was my great grandmother’s. They were definitely a labor of love but we were really happy with how they turned out! I also made all the necklaces that the bridesmaids wore and each locket had a small piece of paper with the trait I most love about them. Our ring box was handcrafted by Jimmy’s Grandfather.

The other portion of the day that had been top priority for us from the day we got engaged was the ceremony. There seems to be a lot of emphasis placed on the reception at weddings, but for us the ceremony was by far the most important part of the day. Our college ministry was the most significant part of our years in college – it was where we met our best friends, our mentors and each other. We actually got engaged in the very front of the chapel, so it was incredibly significant for us to also get married there.

The actual setup of the ceremony was important to us and because we were working with a large stage we knew that we had to bring it in somehow. The doors were symbolic for us of moving into a new season – a door to a new stage in our lives. We included all our siblings in the ceremony. Jimmy’s brother was his best man, but I have four brothers and we couldn’t have all of them in the wedding party. One stood up for Jimmy as a groomsman and representative of all the brothers, another played all the music and the other did a reading for us.

The goal for the reception was for it to feel simple and pretty. Everything was DIY, from the table runners, to the jars for flowers, to everything on the head table, to the seating chart, to every thing for the ceremony. In the end, we did feel like every piece of the day had the fingerprints of our family and friends and us. A friend made the suggestion to arrange the tables at the reception like we did so that it felt like a family meal. All the wood used for the stands for table numbers came from a tree in my family’s backyard.

The other moment that was incredibly significant for me was the father daughter dance. I’m the only girl in my family and my dad is a musician. When I was born he wrote me a song and videotaped himself playing the guitar and singing it. Unbeknownst to him, I stole that tape, converted it to digital format and edited the video to show clips of us while I was young and they played over top the song. He was completely caught off guard when the video started playing as we came onto the dance floor. We both cried. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.

From the Groom:
My favorite memory from our wedding day was the ceremony. It was such as powerful moment, standing up in front of all of our friends and family, making a life-long commitment to my bride. My second favorite memory is from the reception. Our reception hall was at an art center that had two levels. The second level looked down onto the dance floor. About halfway through the reception, I went upstairs and looked down at all of our favorite people, together in one place, having a blast. I realized that it is probably the only time that we will get all of these people together in one place again; but that is what made it special.
