Vintage European-Inspired Barn Wedding

bridal gown by Vera Wang

Heather and Garen met and fell in love while they were both living abroad in Spain, so it wasn’t a big surprise they wanted to incorporate the European culture they grew to love in their big celebration. Their venue, an old barn in Oxnard, California, was decorated both inside and out with rustic and vintage furnishings and embellishments to create the old-world, laid back atmosphere they were looking for.

Be sure to read on to hear so much more from Heather about their special day — especially their full budget breakdown. Don’t miss any of the inspiring details from this vintage European-inspired barn wedding in the full gallery here, all stunningly captured by Vis Photography.

From the Bride:
Since Garen and I met and fell in love while we were living in Spain, we really wanted to incorporate Spanish culture into our wedding. We were also looking for something unique, rustic, elegant and intimate. We wanted to have an outdoor wedding and an indoor reception that was filled with candles! We found all of that at the Graf Barn!

It was even better that Laina, the owner and caterer, lived in Portugal for some years with her family because she appreciated European culture and was able to capture the look and feel of what we were aiming for (basically an old-world charm/laid-back California vibe). The food was Mediterranean-inspired and we were lucky that Laina was familiar with Spanish cuisine and cooked some of our favorites for the cocktail hour!

Garen and I would spend the weekends leading up to the wedding checking out the local flea markets in search of vintage postcards. We looked for cities that we had visited and ended up using those as our “table numbers.” So instead of Table 1, a guest would be at the Madrid table (for example). We also brought back the wine corks of bottles we had shared together and put the place cards in them. We wanted to add little, special touches to the wedding that made it more personal.

Laina had an old monastery table and a French stained-glass church door which we absolutely loved (again little details like that which complimented the whole look).

We absolutely love all of the stunning vintage decor and the little antique touches that wrapped everything together into one gorgeous wedding. One simple detail that accentuated the romantic atmosphere, gave a pop of color and would be easy to do yourself was the addition of lavender sprigs to the table settings. To hold it in place tie it with a cute complimentary ribbon!

I think if we had more of a budget, I would have hired a wedding coordinator. While Garen and I did a great job of managing everything ourselves, I think it would have alleviated a bit of stress to have someone help with the planning and organizing.

Luckily we have AMAZING friends and family that we were able to delegate tasks to which really helped in the end. Other than that, everything was truly perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a single thing! Okay maybe perhaps eating before the wedding — they always tell brides to do that, but we never do and end up starving by the time the reception rolls around :)

Chaviano Couture Kristy gown

From Annette Thurmon:
Our newest collection embodies romance and timeless elegance. Beautiful silhouettes that flow with tulle and gorgeous lace. For this collection we created a one-of-a kind gown with the help of Kristy Rice. A beautiful ball gown with endless yards of hand painted silk organza by Kristy in a pattern exclusive to Chaviano Couture. It is our favorite gown in the collection.

Our collection is unique with delicate details including pockets, hand applied beading, hand sewn lace, horsehair braid, and some extra sparkle! We truly believe wearing a wedding gown should be an unforgettable experience. Proceeds from each gown sold go to a charity or mission project around the world. We aim to leave a lasting impression not only on our brides, but in someone’s life as well. We hope you love this collection as much as we do!

From the Bride:
The day before my wedding my father was hospitalized for Pancreatitis. Everything is fine now and he is healthy, but he wasn’t able to make it to the wedding as they had to send him to a hospital closer to home. My brothers stepped in at the last minute to walk me down the aisle. They even all took turns dancing with me during what should have been the father daughter dance, along with my uncle (my dad’s brother).

Thanks to technology and wonderful friends, my dad was able to Skype in from the hospital to see the ceremony and got to say “Hi” to me before the wedding. While I of course would have wanted my father there, it became a wonderful bond my brothers and I now share.

My husband and I discussed whether we would have done anything differently awhile back and our answer was no. We felt that we had plenty of time to plan and every decision was well thought out so we didn’t have any regrets. In fact, we were pleased with the “extra” things we thought we ordered. We had a videographer, which we hadn’t initially planned on. She is a friend of mine and gave us an affordable deal, so we went for it.

It turns out it was a blessing in disguise because of my father’s hospitalization. I couldn’t have changed the fact that he was sick, but I am able to share a video of that day with him, to make him feel part of his daughter’s wedding (which he has shown to his co-workers over and over to the point where they are now sick of it!) So, my advice to brides would be that you can’t plan for the unexpected, but you can prepare to treasure your memories and share them by having them captured in videos and photographs that will last a life time.

Rustic Midwestern Destination Wedding at Juliane James Place

Rivets and Roses photographer

After entering and winning (by a landslide) the 2012 photography giveaway from Rivets and Roses, Kirsten and Graeme tied the knot at a woodsy outdoor ceremony at Juliane James Place in Northern Minnesota. To make their wedding day everything they hoped for this Canadian groom and American bride enlisted the experts at Bash Collective, who coordinated and designed their event to perfection.

Be sure to read on to hear so much more from Kirsten about their special day — especially their full budget breakdown. Don’t miss anything from this rustic Midwestern destination wedding by viewing the full gallery here, all beautifully photographed by the talented Louisa Podlich of Rivets and Roses.

hummingbird wedding invites

A graphic designer by trade, the bride designed all of the stationary and paper goods herself. Using the poem Tale of Two Hummingbirds as inspiration, Kirsten added a personal touch with the custom invitations, ceremony programs, wedding favors and seating placards. You can read the entire poem below.

Tale of Two Hummingbirds
Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time,
Carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration.
Hummingbirds open our eyes to the wonder of the world
And inspire us to open our hearts to loved ones and friends.
Like a hummingbird, we aspire to hover and to savor each moment as it passes, embrace all that life has to offer
And to celebrate the joy of everyday.
The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation.

After meeting at a Phish concert in September of 2011, Kirsten and Graeme fell in love and were engaged two months later! They also didn’t waste any time getting married and set the date for their wedding on the one year anniversary of the day they met. Living in different countries, these lovebirds decided to have a destination wedding in the Midwest and chose Juliane James Place as their venue.

From Bash Collective:
We collected vintage oil lamps, mismatched china, antique apothecary bottles, and matching vases for willows for the couples decor. Tall curly willows in vases added more height, whimsy, and contrast to the soft pastels of the table decor. Antique apothecary bottles were filled with blush and pink roses, scabiosa pods, and baby’s breathe.

Munster Rose created lush, beautiful florals that complimented the pastel color scheme of the wedding and the couple’s desire to let nature and the environment they were in, shine through. The bride cried when she saw her bouquet for the first time.

This Vintage Natural theme extended to the couple having their dog, Keeva, next to them all day, including at dinner where she was a very good girl and laid between her parents on a gray fainting sofa that is part of Juliane James Place‘s permanent furniture collection.

The uniqueness of the wedding was added to when the couple’s parents did a flag exchange of an American (Kirsten’s home country) and Canadian (Graeme’s home country) flag and promised to fly them on Independence and Canada Day respectively.

From the Bride:
I was pretty relaxed when it came to our wedding weekend, but do wish I would’ve done a few things differently. I wish I would’ve had the wedding earlier on in the day so that we could’ve had a longer reception/dance.

As for the day and the setting, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. It was beautiful! I would’ve worked harder at having more alone time with my fiance before the wedding and the night/day after. Unfortunately we didn’t get much privacy.
