The ring is on and you have said, “Yes!” It is know time to find the perfect wedding dress! New York film Photographer, Jen Huang Photography wanted to focus on real women at the moment they find their perfect wedding dress. So she went to the beautiful, Lovely Bride Atelier in New York City and, with the help of Tammy Golson, rounded up some of the best dresses, accessories and shoes to capture the essence of finding the perfect wedding dress!
Below are a few tips on what do before going out and about to find your perfect dress. Please share with everyone, (by leaving a comment of course) if you have any other tips to dress shopping that might be helpful.
Tips to finding the perfect wedding dress!
1. It might sound obvious but inquire with the dress shops to see if you need an appointment to try on dresses.
2. Bring some loved ones that will support your fashion taste and make you feel good about yourself.
3. Be sure you feel extra pretty before you try on your dresses. Get your hair and makeup done!
4. Bring in some baubles! Gather up some accessories and shoes that you might wear. Dress shops will more than likely have goodies for you to add but they might not suit your particular style.
5. Panties are pretty! Be sure to wear undergarments that fit you properly and match your skin tone. Leave your granny panties at home.
6. Remember this should be a momentous and beautiful occasion. Try not to get too stressed out!

Hey! That’s me modeling! :)
loved trying these on!!!
Can someone say more about this dress with the flowers on the skirt? Which designer is it? It is so wonderful!
For brides with a set budget for a wedding dress, I would say to “control” yourself from trying on dresses that are obviously beyond your limit. Once you put it on and you absolutely fall in love with it, you will “forget” your budget limit. This may/ may not be a bad idea, depending on everyone’s situation, but the thoughts of paying soooo much for a dress that you wear only in one day is scary to me!
My dress shopping experience was a little stressful and very tiring, but it ended well with me finding the dress I have always dreamed about, and I owe it all to the support and determination of my mom and MOH who came with me. My advice:
1. As everyone else is saying, bring only a couple peeps with you, who you trust and who will not wimp out during what might be a frusterating day. If they’re going to make you feel bad for getting emotional when you start to get tired, or because your body doesn’t look quite right in the style of dress you had always dreamed of, then don’t bring them with!!
I was so tempted to invited my mother in law and a few friends but I am so glad I didn’t. The three of us were exhausted and hungry and a little crabby after the long day, and having more ppl around would have made matters worse.
2. If you walk into a shop and the attendents are rude to you, rush you, or don’t listen to you when you tell them what price range/style/designer you’re looking for, then don’t waste your time there!! I went to several shops where the attendents ignored my request for a-line dresses and kept bringing me the styles THEY thought were pretty. I finally found my perfect dress at a tiny shop that only had about 20 different dresses in stock. The attendent was sweet and friendly and gave me her undevived attention. They only had one dressing room, so we had the place to ourselves and I wasn’t falling all over other brides in order to get a turn at the mirror (that’s how it is at these huge Kleinfield type stores– they are packed with crabby brides!)
3. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Unless you’re one of these girls that tries on the very first dress and it’s “the one”– You will get tired and you will want to quit. Snacks help. Everyone feels better after a snack. :)
Good luck!! :)
Great information! I would like to suggest only bringing one or two people with you. The more you bring the harder it is going to be to please everyone. Also, limit the number of dresses you plan to try on each time you visit a bridal shop to no more than 4 or 5. This way you don’t get tired out and can better remember each dress and how it looked on you. Don’t try on to many dresses and become overwhelmed!
1. Don’t limit yourself to who it is “proper” to bring. Ex: I brought my dad and he loved being the one to find my dress.
2. (for the bigger than a size 8 bride) If you can’t try on the dress in your size go to another boutique and try on other dresses that have some of the details you love. It’s how I decided on my dress.
Surely this one of those moments every lady dreams about from her childhood. The search for the perfect dress in which she will present herself to her husband on their wedding day.
Sound advice–but go light on the makeup. Looking pretty and groomed is great, but remember you are trying on a shop’s white dresses. Getting in and out of them will be easier if you’re not worried about leaving lip gloss behind.

i don’t know much about finding a dress, but Jen’s photos are awesome!!!!
Bring along people who know your style and will be honest, but will also gush appropriately when you find THE dress. (This is why I didn’t bring my mom. She is gush-proof) And the more you talk with your consultant about what specifically you like and don’t like about each dress, the better chance she has of pulling something you will love.
And YES to cameras and champagne. It is absolutely an experience to remember!
Anyone know who makes that veil? I have been searching for one just like it. My advice? Go with an open mind.
@Jay is correct, bring people who’s style you trust. It is really hard to have a dress on that you love and have friends or family nitpick. Remember it is your wedding!!
Nude, regular panties is a great idea. I made the mistake of wearing a thong.
Definitely try on all shapes of dresses and figure out what works for your body. My dress (the sample) had no shape on the hanger but fit me like a glove when I put it on. I cried and jumped around and it ended up being my perfect dress. I can’t wait to wear it in August!
Definitely drink some champagne to celebrate the day! It goes by so fast and always a great memory.
*Wear supportive undergarments – no bride wants to try on a dress and not have it look sleek & nicely fitting.
*Bring ONLY the people who will give you good advice. People who’s style you trust & best reflects your own. Otherwise you’ll end up confused.
*Bring a camera, in case you do find the dress of your dreams. You can ogle it the whole way home after purchasing.
*Make sure you find a boutique that carries styles you like – otherwise you may waste your time & your stylist’s.
All great tips! Definitely need to leave the granny panties at home! I would also recommend a good strapless bra and maybe shy away from a thong! :-)

Great tips! Especially about bringing accessories and pretty panties :) Definitely no bright stripes!
Good advice… I would also suggest that you keep an open mind and try on dresses that aren’t exactly what you have in mind – It’s amazing how many brides fall in love with dresses they would never have tried on if they hadn’t been coerced!
I just love those brides- missy and maria are so pretty, both inside and out! xx!
